[QUOTE="chakka3421, post: 834273, member: 1091"] Like I've said before, SU became more of a basketball town as the BE conference lost its prominence in football when Miami, VT & BC left - some our best brands left us leaving us with just basketball brands. The BE conference was left with few choices and focused mostly on the success of basketball as few prominent football brands remained (SU, Pitt & WV). During this same time, our good Doctor hired a dud in Grob that practically killed our football brand (mirror of what was happening in BE conference) while 2 no-names came unto the scene - Rutgers & UConn and also Lville building upon its recent success by joining the BE conference. For you junkies arguing over basketball or football - one can argue that our invite had to do more with the rich historical football tradition coupled with the name brand of SU basketball (and 2-3 signature zone) that fit really well into the ACC conference. Part of me really wonders if it weren't for the rich tradition we have in football combined with the recent success of going to 2 bowls in 3 years, would we even be in the ACC as we would be no different than UConn or Rutgers. What the basketball junkies don't understand yet is that the world has changed and is dominated by college football - and that this is a real football conference with FSU having the potential of winning a national championship. That is the new reality that hasn't sunk in yet. Will we ever catch up to the rest of the US and the prominence of college football that drives the bus? I don't know yet but it starts with making bowl games and for fans to go to those bowl games. It also starts with making investments in facilities like the IPF. That's how you build upon the brand - one step at a time. It really is disheartening the short sided discussions that have gone on in this thread as the really long term success of Syracuse sports is dependent upon the long term success of Syracuse football - otherwise if the ACC in the future were to break up - the strong football branded teams in the ACC will win out and having a strong SU football brand literally protects all of SU sports.
