FWIW

It's amazing how a tragically shortened life can turn so many opinions of Doug Marrone around here. And a little sad that's what it takes for people to realize he's a good human being who just got a great offer to coach at the absolute highest level.

I doubt this has changed many people's opinions. This just isn't the time to express trivial fan opinions of a football coach when the discussion is a life tragically cut short and two fatherless kids.

Even people who are often full of it feel grief. He has people who are close to him just like anyone else. Doesn't really change what i think if him

I wish he were still here.

Marrone was a very good person to bring our team from the depths. I do think he loved (loves) the University and will continue to support it as best he can.

The circumstances of his departure were unfortunate - he left us at a time where the team and the University were moving upward in a new direction and a better direction. We had a number of key recruits committed that could probably have made a difference.

But he made a change knowing full well the ramifications to his legacy at SU and the potential pitfalls of the NFL. I truly believe he came to Syracuse intending to stay here for years. But the recruiting, the chasing after 18-22 year old kids and the fundraising aspects of the job, not to mention the football part, made it such that he realized maybe he was not suited to be a college football head coach after all.

Unless you have tremendous boosters and unlimited resources, the world of college football is not for everyone. It's a lot of long hours, a ton of travel and a lot of missed opportunities with family. The NFL schedule is a structured one - you rarely have to worry about a kid getting in trouble in the dorms, having meetings with academic advisors speaking about kids not doing their work, etc.

I do not blame Doug for taking the path to the NFL - and I truly hope (especially as a Bills fan) that he does well. I also hope that Syracuse fans are able to forgive him for the way he left. It is always difficult to leave a job that you have had success for another - people are always going to resent you.

As has been said, it's unfortunate that people need to see the way Doug handled Rob Edson's passing to truly understand he is a caring man - but I just hope that it resonates and brings some closure to some people's thoughts on him as a person and as a professional.
