It's a two way street.

It's possible that the coaching staff told Cuffe and Petar that they weren't going to play here, so best to move on.

Or it is possible that someone like Petar [just for example] decided to leave after Freeman announced he was returning, and Freeman / White project to the 4, which is also Petar's position.

Could also be a little from Column A and Column B.

But it isn't just about being able to afford paying guys -- the portal gives players more options than ever.

Given the programs lack of success recently, having the max amount of scholarships in order to find and assess talent should be prioritized

Good grief. I just can't even answer a post like that. Kids want money and playing time. There is only so much playing time available. We aren't going to play 12 guys the minutes they want.

Our best teams mostly had a 7-8 man rotation. 2012 was the exception. You can hope that maybe 2 of the younger guys are ok with this year getting spot minutes, but there's really no point having more than 10-11 guys anymore. No one wants to sit and wait to play.

I agree with the sentiment of your post, but why shouldn't we expect them to use the full scholarship allotment (if I'm understanding you correctly)? Most, if not all, other comp programs are filling out the roster, so why shouldn't we? Now we also could go up to 15, so only using 10 or 11 because those at the bottom might not get minutes they want seems like we're leaving ourselves quite thin.

But then again, if at some point from injury or whatever we're relying on guys like Womack or whichever late spring/summer portal/Euro adds are left, then perhaps it doesn't matter anyhow.

I don't necessarily disagree, but how is that any different than at Clemson or Marquette or Georgia or whatever team isn't loaded?

I'm not saying use 15, but I'd have to believe we should do more than 10-11. But yeah, convincing guys to come to this program for minimal cash or playing time guarantees may be a challenge.

Clemson had 11 scholarship guys this year. Marquette had 10 that played.

You have to have 10 to scrimmage. That assumes you have 2 guys at every position. What if someone gets injured? I doubt we play more than 8-9 guys regularly, but I think we need 12 guys. A couple of those guys should be low cost, yet high potential guys that would develop and hopefully stay.

Practically speaking, we went 10 deep this past season. Technically it was 11 but McLeod really only saw minutes when Freeman went down for the year.

10 is definitely cutting it close though. More than 1 significant injury and we could be in tough shape, since I gotta figure a couple of the frosh won't be strong contributors.

It's playing with fire, though.

If you don't have injuries, 10 or 11 is adequate. But have a guy or two get dinged up or sustain an injury that's more severe, and all of the sudden you are significantly compromised. It's like driving without insurance, you cross your fingers -- and sometimes you don't get burned, but sometimes you do.
