NC State is coming off of a bye week and unlike Wake they will be prepared. Just look at how Penn State played Ohio State yesterday with PSU coming off of a bye. PSU fans have reason to be excited about their future with James Franklin. SU needs to be ready for NC State.
Against Clemson SU's defense continued to show improvement. SU's defense is every bit as legitimate as BC's defense, and actually SU held Clemson to fewer points than both BC and Louisville. But clearly Clemson's offense is not the same with Stoudt playing QB, at least so far. Watson was injured against Louisville (go figure) in the second quarter of that game. The mystery with Clemson is how they lost to Florida State with Watson and without Jameis Winston playing QB for FSU. On that note SU's game last night with Clemson reminded me a little bit of SU's game against ND, and ND went into Tallahassee and nearly beat FSU with Jameis Winston. Wow, SU has played several good teams this year.
I like the signs of improvement with SU's defense, and I hope they can continue to make strides. The defensive line is legitimate. The safeties continue to be a concern mostly because #3 is playing with a lot of pain and also because #8 struggles at times although he did execute the INT yesterday which was very nice. Holding any team to 16 points on the road especially in a festive environment like Clemson Memorial Stadium at night is a great accomplishment.
No way a true freshman QB could prepare enough to simulate playing against a very talented defense at night in front of it's very large home crowd. AJ was shaky, but he battled through it. He missed a run or two that would have helped the offense, but I'm wondering if maybe he was advised to limit running the ball in light of the injury problems right now at QB. Nice to see Broyld and his athleticism back. He fell down on a reception in the flat where he gained 6 yards, and he had no defender within 5 or more yards. If he and AJ could have connected better they might have picked up a first down right there and also in at least one other spot that I noticed.
This game was a great learning experience for the offense and for the defense, and this week is a very important week to apply those lessons and head into the final third of the season playing the best ball of the season. Keep on moving on Cuse!
