Nebraska, Oregon St, Oregon, Nevada= Cailfornia kids, LA and Bay area, I can see the gang activity. Where from Rutgers? Jersey/ NYC I guess. Interesting
Camden, Newark, Long Island. I remember reading on NJ.com a year or so ago that more than 200 New Jersey communities had a gang presence ranging from a half dozen or so members to hundreds. Don't forget that Rutgers was the college of choice for the kids of members of Tony Soprano's mob. That's not just fiction. (The Philly mob prefers Villanova)
Maybe its a good thing we haven't been as successful recruiting New Jersey as many would like. Sounds right up Shady's alley.Nebraska, Oregon St, Oregon, Nevada= Cailfornia kids, LA and Bay area, I can see the gang activity. Where from Rutgers? Jersey/ NYC I guess. Interesting
Definitely big time gang issues in NJ. My daughter's brother (my ex's son), a 2012 Rutgers commit, got into a beef w/ some Bloods in Linden. He ended it by beating the crap out of the gang leader and fortunately, there was no retaliation. In fact, that incident combined w/ his football skills basically made him the king of the town. My daughter never has a problem b/c kids fear crossing her brother but the gangs are a problem in Jersey. There is gang activity in most large towns and small cities in the U.S. Rutgers' main campus is right next door to South Plainfield, which has a big gang problem.
Saw the report last night. Couple of points from the article:
1. Mike Leach was the head football coach at highly-ranked Texas Tech from 2000-2009. Over 20 years of coaching one of his players was shot by a gang member, and he got rid of another who posted gang slogans on his Facebook page.
"If you have somebody drawing influence from something off-campus, especiall illegal involving drugs and firearms," Leach said, "then I think you risk contaminating the other 125 players."
Holy crap - 40 walk-ons? Wow.
2. No one keeps track, but we found suspected gang-related incidents involving college athletes at Rutgers, Oregon, Oregon State, Nebraska, Nevada and Southern Mississippi - for charges ranging from assault to murder.
Say it ain't so, Shady! I'm afraid to say "nothing like that at SU", because each time I say something like that lately, it seems to come true. Oh Lord

Like I said in another post, there is gang activity in many places you wouldn't expect. There is plenty of gang activity in CNY. I passed a whole posse of what I assume were Bloods on Colvin St. (after turning off of S. Salina) when leaving SU after the game last Saturday.
Agreed. And then there's that fine line between being "affiliated" and "active." Lots of kids are "affiliated" just b/c they live in a neighborhood run by a particular gang and in order to survive and move about peacefully, they claim membership to "the set" -- aka the kids they've known since kindergarten -- even though they don't actually participate in the gang's criminal activities.Anyone in the U.S. who thinks there aren't gangs within a short drive of them are likely delusional or uninformed. I guarantee that SU has had former players that were at least friends with gang members in Syracuse.

Or like some of the Bloods I know, they may have been active as teens but are now older, working jobs and raising kids yet they're still affiliated even though they're completely inactive. It's like a frat in some ways; once you pledge, you're in for life even if you no longer participate. Snoop Dogg is probably a famous example. He's not an active gang banger but he's still a Crip and still sports the colors. Frankly, I don't get it but I see it all the time in my area.

I passed a whole posse of what I assume were Bloods on Colvin St. (after turning off of S. Salina) when leaving SU after the game last Saturday. Before anyone asks why I assume this, there were 4-5 teenage kids/young men dressed predominantly in red clothing, hats, bandanas, etc. Since I don't know that much about gang colors, I suppose there are other gangs that wear red, but gang activity nonetheless, within a mile of SU.

Absolutely. And that's a big motivation in a violent neighborhood or city.It probably keep you from getting shot as well... street cred.
Anyone else reminder John Wall walking of the court throwing gang signs while at Kentucky?
3 students at the ATO frat house got stabbed by a blood two years ago for not letting him into their house. Kid yelled "alpha beta bloods" and then stabbed the doorman.
Oh yeah ? If your going to make such claims then spill the beans.SU in the 90's had gang members on the team
SU today has gang members on the team
Was he really throwing signs? Didn't some sportswriters/fans think half the NBA was throwing up gang signs a couple years ago, when they were doing the same thing Andy always did when he made a three. (The circle with the index finger/thumb and three fingers extended)
Or maybe Andy just rolls 10 deep with the Latin Kings. Who knows.
