Understanding the shot clock, but with face-offs, is lacrosse the only sport where you could end up losing because you scored a goal (point) late in the game, with a lead.
Also, in order to reset the shot clock, what counts as a shot?

Shot on cage or pipe, or a goalie save.

Just tossing the ball over the cage doesn't reset the clock.

See also: football and onside kicks.

If you’re up by one score with the ball very late, it’s better to kill the clock than score. But most kids don’t think that way. It drives me crazy to watch.

Only once in a while will you see someone go down on purpose on a sure scoring play in this situation.

With the shot clock now, whether you shoot depends on how much time is left in the game. If the goalie is out with 2:10 to go, kill what you can, but it makes sense to score at the end of 80 or 60 seconds.

If you are ahead in football, and score... you are NOT going to do an onside kick. However, the idea that you could lose because of scoring in football is valid if you are only ahead by a point and get a touchdown that allows the opponent to get the ball back. Even if you are certain there is no way you are going to lose.. see Buffalo-KC playoff ending this year (best final two minutes of any professional game of any sport ever?? unless you are from Buffalo).

***Note: Buffalo-KC game is an example of being certain the game is over, not scoring with the lead when you could hold the ball.

It's not unreasonable that you might never get the ball back in lacrosse.

Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. Your opponent in theory has the opportunity to have consecutive possessions via onside kicks. I wasn’t talking about the team that’s up onside kicking.

Example: up 3, 1:00 left. Score a TD on a long play.

Now up 10, kick off like normal. They return it for a TD.

Clearly they’re going to onside kick in response. They never would have had an opportunity in the game if the team that was originally up had run the clock out.

The notion that lacrosse is the only sport where the team that is winning scoring late can hurt their chances is not 100% accurate.

basketball fits this description with the 3 pointer.

The scored on team always gets the ball. They might turn it over, but their hands are on the ball. In Lacrosse, that might not happen.

his question didn't give all specifics about shot vlock and end of game... but assuming a team could've run out most or all of clock if not shooting... up one and you take a layup and the opposing team hits a 3... now they can lose. so it fits his scenario.
