I wrote about my friend JB many times over the years I have been a poster on this board. Perhaps some haven’t read about recruiting and the time you put in as a HC at a high major university. The picture is one of total exhaustion and getting sleep when you can where you can. I mentioned that when I had graduated living in CT, a friend of mine and another SU grad would meet Jim and the team about 5 P.M. at Bradley Int’l airport arriving to play at UConn. The team would board a bus that would take them to the Farmington Marriott and instead of going with the team and get to put his feet up for a couple of hours, Jim would jump into my friends car and we’d drive to either a basketball game(s) where he knew a recruit would be playing or a recruits house to meet the recruits and his parents. We’d have a good time talking on the way about who he was going to see, his feelings about the UConn game and general conversation about the team, how he was and his thoughts about the season. Then we’d hit the games and homes for the next 4 hours seeing at least 5 recruits. Jim would take minimal notes; most of the evenings information about recruits he’d store in his mind. Then we’d race to his favorite restaurant a French/Italian very excellent one called L’Auberge de Paris where he would order his favorite - Chicken Parm with sauce and sides. By the time we reached the Marriott it was midnight. My point here is that Jim did a lot of recruiting on his own putting in long days even when the team had an away game. We did many recruiting trips with him over the years. From 1977 through 1986, he’d climb into the car at the airport, and we’d go to basketball recruiting games, recruits homes and restaurants. It was a great time. Heart and persistence, Jim had both big time.
