because I thought we won the game in spite of what i thought were some bad coaching decisions all day long. i haven't read much of the board, my apologies if this has been discussed...

1) The lack of clock management at the end of the first half was comical. you can't go hurry up inside of 2 minutes on the 2 yard line. BC should have got the ball back inside of ;30 second and been forced to take a knee.

2) What calling the first time out after a first down by BC at the 2;37 mark of the 4th. Really?? Thankfully, BC coaches upped the ante by throwing the ball to the sideline on 3rd down.

3) After Hunt fake spiked and ran for the first down...we did the unthinkable...we substited two players and changed offensive personel. lost 7-8 seconds. Someone needs explain to our 2 minute drill coordinator why that can't be part of any no timeout 2 minute drill. i lost my in the stands when that happened. my apologies to those who were sitting near me.

4) okay, while everyone is back slapping on the winning TD play...has anyone given thought to what happens if parris is tackled at the 2yard line? with no timeouts, we don't get another play off. We should have taken 3-4 shots in the end zone. players executed and bailed out their OC on that play. if parris gets tackled, i'm not sure mcdonald gets out of the dome alive. and the two blockers did whiff on the BC guy out there, parris just made him miss.

having said that. i thought the game plan was solid on both sides of the ball, just hated the game management almost all day long. i'm still not sold on mcdonald being a good play caller and adjusting to game situations. Too much seems pre destined without thought given to game develepments. i hope that can be learned on the job.

Bottom line though is this. i think we're all in agreement that given injuries, graduation and coaching transition, this year looked to be the worst year from a w-l perspective of the next 3-4 years...if our program bottom is now 6-6 and a bowl game...we're in good shape.

need to spend some of that ACC money on recruits...er...recruiting.

I had no problem with this. You need to score and never should question when we actually score points and if our defense cant stop a team with 50 seconds left and 80 yards to go then What? 80 yards in 3 plays?

I started a thread on this last night. I almost had a heart attack when they threw it outside of the end zone. I was more worried about the turf monster getting him than actually being tackled.

Was listening on the radio, what was the coverage on that pass to Amidon late in the 1st half? Park said it was man and Amidon ran a deep cross- where were the safeties? That late TD was huge and I didn't understand how you could be in man with no help on him. Was that the case, or was it a blown coverage?

I did point it out in a previous thread that the throwback play was a win or die play call

RE: #2

Because the clock would start on the ready and they would have burned 40 seconds more?

I had the same initial reaction as Jake to the end of the first half but I changed my mind during halftime. Playing up-tempo is a major reason why they were moving the ball. Why would you go away from that just because of the time left? BC still had to go 80 yards with :50 or so left. Usually that doesn't happen. And it only happened because they bit hard on the play fake and Rettig delivered it on the money to the lumbering TE down field.

you are wrong about the time out. And believe me, I went crazier than you when they called it. The clock started. They would have run :40 off the clock. Now, since we used the time out, they could have run it off on the other hand. But they didn't. Without those :40 we don't win.

Reddish got caught watching the ball.

That is a great call. He slowed down instead of beating Amidon to the spot. Even pass interference would have been a better play by Reddish.

Okay. That makes sense. unless you're a BC fan, then i suspect they would have lost their .

Three major, major issues that we'll call a "learning experience" since we're so happy the team won:

1) Starting final drive, a two minute drill, with only one play called…second week in a row and inexcusable to look over to the sidelines and waste even 7 seconds that shouldn't happen

2) the substitutions (mentioned above) on 1st and 10 that cost 10 seconds on that last drive

3) the last play call was pretty crazy despite the fact that it worked. Your players have 3 chances to win the game and go to a Bowl (12 seconds, 5 seconds per quick pass play into the End Zone), and you run a blind pass that has the chance to end the game prematurely?

Noone is complaining since it all worked out and they won the game, but hopefully this doesn't get passed down as a positive "this was the right way to do this" learning experience….instead, they should celebrate like heck but understand that this needs to get cleaned up if you're going to be doing it the right way.

Just my thoughts.

I agree with much of the OP.

It did occur to me that we left too much time on the clock at the end of the half.

I could not believe that we allowed that BC TD to pull within 7 at the half - really awful.

And at the end I agree that we allowed too much time to run off the clock by the time we got to the 20 yard line.

Three DBs were standing 20 yards deep not guarding anyone. Maybe more worried about the run or maybe keying on the WRs.

That last 2 minute drill may not have been the way you draw it up, but we have a young OC who hasn't been in many of those, and a bunch of young players who have hardly had reps all season long. Considering all of that, I was thrilled with how they pulled it off. All of them together. Big plays when they needed them. Final play was great, BC completely didn't expect it. Having Hunt force one into the end zone (considering the INT he had just thrown) would have been about the last thing I would have wanted. I doubt he'd have much touch on a fade pass either.

The time out was the right call. The last call was the best shot to win, it was a huge risk but showed gonads, What is hunt going to do with two shots in the end zone when they know it's coming. I also don't thinking going into a shell at the end of the first half is right when they haven't stopped you all day. That is football in the modern era of college game. Score, score and score again and for one game this year we were playing it. Run your offense don't go into the nfl shell.

Much better game plan, more Hunt running, play action, throwing to the TE, attacking BC's weakness on pass defense.

Shafer did step in on one play 3rd and 2 at mid field and Macdonald calls an empty set. Shafer put the kibosh on that.

I agree with everything else in your post, but this. I liked the last play call. It was one of the few non-obvious calls McDonald made. The point is to get in the end zone, and you could pretty much see the SU player was going to do just that before he even caught the ball. I know I started cheering as soon as he caught it.

I don't trust Hunt to throw fades in that, or any situation. His receivers pretty much need to be WIDE open.

We can also give some thought to the pass interference call. Without that, we don't win.

bad pass interference calls late giveth (SU) and bad pass interference calls late taketh away (Bills)

Millhouse... So you've come out of your fetal position before 1/1/14?

I agree with the misdirection pass playcall...trying to shove it into a tight window isn't our strong suit.

So, since all the OC play calls vs talent threads, doesn't this game address the OC at fault for a lot of the season? If you can call a game like this, where was it all season? This imo showed Mcd could've called slants, etc all season and players would've made it happen.

Guys like AC and the younger backs might not have been ready earlier in the season.

And why wasn't AC tried waay before the 2nd to last game? I'm not saying there was an answer behind every corner, but there certainly were answers for some ineptness, especially for the people who solely blamed talent...
