Here's a highly unofficial tally of players who have dropped career highs on us since the start of the 2008-09 season, when I first started to pay attention to the stat.

There are undoubtedly many others who had modest career highs of 6 or 8 points, for example, but escaped my attention. Also, normally I don't check to see if it registers as a career high unless the player scores around 15+ points, or if I happen to recall the announcers mentioning it during the telecast.

11/24/08 A. Tyus (FLA) - 24 pts (W)
12/3/08 R. Wittman (CORN) - 33 pts (W)
1/14/09 J. Clark (Gtown) - 12 pts (L)

Damn that J. Dixon on 1/2/10!

Assume that's a typo, but very interesting data, Poppy.

What was SU's record in those games?

"man you just got plaviched !" (10 treys ...and yeah we lost to charlotte unc)

I wonder how many of these remained career highs for those players. For instance, if a young player just starting to receive big minutes happened to have his first 20 point game against us early in the season, it's not as bad if he later scored 20+ in multiple games that season or other subsequent seasons.

8-18. I updated the chart to show the w's and l's.
Thanks. That's far worse than I would have guessed.

wait, how'd you leave off the Greek dude for Wake last year??

I should have noted that it is only games that I have DVD copies for, which is all but a handful. I do not have a copy of that game. I think it was one of the games only available on ESPN3 IIRC.

There were actually 2 Temple players who notched career highs against SU in that '12 game at MSG. As Poppy noted, Wyatt was one, and Anthony Lee was the other.

Also, Tyler Hubbard for Loyola in '14.

What about L Ron Hubbard? I heard he has a very dianetic, I mean dynamic game.

:confused:Maybe we good at taking away what a team wants to do, so they adjust and we do not take that away until too late.

More importantly, this is a trend that goes back a LOT further than the data you presented. Its been happening forever.

Ron Mercer is the first name that pops into my head.

But I bet it goes back beyond that, too.

Yes, I've noted this trend too. I always interpretted it as Boeheim usually takes away your #1 option and if your lesser players can rise to the occasion and really break out of statistical expectations then, yes you have a good chance to beat us. I've said 100x and people don't seem to hear it: JB is a baseball manager. He plays the percentages. Many could argue that in a sport like college basketball, that is not a good strategy, 1 loss prevents you from winning it all.

In one sense you cannot argue with it, honestly. Look at this list. On the surface, it looks horrible, but in reality it is what 26 games over a 7 year period and of those 26 games, only 18 led to defeat for us. So figure there were approximately 245 games in that period of time and the strategy failed in only 7.3% of the games. Certainly in baseball, that is pure gold. In fairness, however, the strategy sort of defines Boeheim as a "compiler" as he is sometimes accused of being. In other words - if you view a 6 game season to get an NC with one loss being the end, playing percentages is possibly dubious, where as if you look at a 40 year career, it gets you in the Hall of Fame.

As painful as many of these were - and are - for my $, the worst was Kyle Kuric.

At that time, Kuric was the quintessential "random white guy" from the other team, who utterly annihilated us, in the worst NBA Jam way possible:
raining 3's, and throwing down massive slams.

Pitino grabbed him from the very end of the bench, & threw him in the game with the words "go out and dominate!" - so he did.
:(

Tom Greis

Tom Greis was the very first name that came to mind for me also. At least he turned out to have a good career but everybody that night was wondering who the heck this guy was????

Kuric has nothing on Brian Fair. Or that stiff 2G from Notre Dame in 1998, Keith Friel.

Nightmares...
