New York Pennants
I wondered if there have been more pennants won by New York City American League or National League teams. The answer seems obvious with the great historical success of the Yankees but they never won one until 1921. The National League began in 1876. New York teams had had plenty of success there before the Yankees ever existed and the Dodgers won a pennant in the then major league American Association in 1889 before they jumped to the more established league. You are adding the combined histories of the Giants, the Dodgers and the Mets together. That shoudlb e quite a total in its own right. So here goes:
(World Champions in bold)
1884 New York Metropolitans AA (Lost to the NL’s Providence Grays)
1888 New York Giants NL (Beat the St. Louis Browns of the AA for the World Championship)
1889 New York Giants NL (Beat the Brooklyn Bridegrooms of the AA for the World Championship)
1889 Brooklyn Bridegrooms AA (Dodgers)
1890 Brooklyn Bridegrooms NL (Dodgers- The series between the NL and AA was abandoned but there still was an AA so no World Champion this year)
1904 New York Giants NL (There was no World Series and thus no World Champion, since the AL had won the series the year before)
1905 New York Giants NL
1911 New York Giants NL
1912 New York Giants NL
1913 New York Giants NL
1916 Brooklyn Robins NL (Dodgers)
1917 New York Giants NL

2009 New York Yankees AL
2015 New York Mets NL
New York Yankees- 40 Pennants, 28 Championships
New York Giants- 17 Pennants, 7 Championships
Brooklyn Dodgers- 11 Pennants, 1 Championship
New York Mets- 5 Pennants, 2 Championships
Original New York Mets- 1 Pennant 0 Championships
Total- 74 Pennants, 38 Championships
So the Yankees have won 40 of the 74 pennants and 28 of 38 championships. It’s tough even for three franchises to beat them.
There have been 15 Subway Series: 1889, (although there wasn’t a subway back then), 1921, 1922, 1923, 1936, 1937, 1941, 1947, 1949, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 2000
