I know there are a few professional golf threads out there, but I thought this could be more for posters as players. I just got back into the game late this summer after about a 17 year hiatus (kids and career) and have really got the bug again. Thought this could be a thread about course recommendations, travel, equipment, getting a game, etc.

My goals for this year are to lower my handicap (aiming for single digit, but I'd take south of 12) and out on some of the more esteemed courses in Upstate NY and the surrounding area (e.g., Sagamore, Saratoga, Taconic, Leatherstocking, etc.). I'm not a member anywhere and that stifles may ability to get out on some of the courses designed by the preeminent architects.

Curious if anyone has any travel planned? I know Capt. Tuttle has really been getting out there.

went to Pinehurst in October . Did the non pinehurst tracks...mid pines, southern pines, tobacco road, tallamore, pine needles, forest creek. Heading to Tuscon in 3 weeks where I will play 3 times (not a guys golf trip but still playing). Star Pass and heading down to play Tubac (Tin Cup course)

I've never heard of the last few courses. I'm putting off golf related travel until my sons get a little older and my handicap a little lower. I would like to hit the Pinehurst area at some point though, whether it is to play the courses you mention or the courses at the Resort.

Went to the Pinehurst area in November.

We stayed at Pinehurst for a few days and played #6, #4, #8 and #2. They were all great, especially 2 and 8.

Then headed over to nearby Southern Hills and played Mid Pines, Pine Needles and Southern Pines. The accomodations aren't as nice (they were awesome at Pinehurst) but they were fine. A bit dated but okay. The courses were all also really nice. Very comparable to the Pinehurst courses.

The Southern Pines courses were a better value. If you appreciate the better things in life, Pinehurst would probably be more up your alley. Really enjoyed both.

Sweet trip. We made it over to pinehurst and went to the hall of fame, saw paynea statue, etc.

We stayed in the brooks cottage at tallamore. It was sweet for 8 guys. Basically a house

Really good trip either way you go

That is funny, I did the exact same thing last year after about playing maybe once or twice a year for about 20 years tops. I had not picked up a club since Covid and started playing a lot last year

I was fortunate enough to play at Pinehurst twice last year. Between the two trips- played #’s 1,2,3,4, 8 & 10. Simply outstanding experience. For any Pinehurst veterans out there- #10 (the new sand mines course) is breathtaking. Our group agreed it was our favorite (#2 probably has its own category as the US Open venue and history associated with it).

While down there we also played Tobacco Road- I can see the allure but I really didn’t enjoy it, especially for the expense.

Hoping to do another trip next year and do some of the Southern Pines courses…

Have green lakes on Sunday. Looking forward to it. I bet it’s been 20 years since I’ve last played. I hear it’s great this year.

Three years ago, I spent a month in Inverness, Scotland. Brought in 4 different groups of golf buddies, one each week. I played ~18 different courses. Afterwards, one buddy and I drove the North Coast 500 and played another 5 courses, including Durness (the most northeasternwestern course in Scotland, featured in the current issue of Gold Digest! Three days after I got back from the trip, Links magazine was delivered and it's cover story was on hidden Scottish gems and a two page picture of Durness was the background for the intro - blew my mind). Everyone still mentions that trip.

About 12 years ago, I was on a golf trip in Ireland. 12 of us on a rock star bus with driver. We played the Island course in Dublin, Royal County Down, drove right past Portrush on the way to play Pt Steward, Rosse Pt, and Galway. Another great trip, which was brought to mind by this year's Open.

Thoughts on golf in Lake Placid? I'm up there next week and thinking about sneaking in a quick 18 (or 9). The Lake Placid links course is supposed to be nice. How is the little 9-er up there?
