Watching Gonzaga play the last few days, I've been amazed to see that the thoroughly debunked and possibly harmful "cupping" marks have reappeared on some of their players.

This completely unproven malarkey of a practice started reemerging in the sports world during the Olympics in both 2012 and 2016 but has mostly started to fall out of popularity again as people realize it has absolutely no beneficial impact other than placebo.

I just find it fascinating that it's coming back once again. Time to bring back kinesiology tape and Reebok Pumps for more support while we're at it.

Not sure what studies disproved the efficacy of cupping. While not conclusive the NIH certainly does not agree...

If you think it works, maybe it does. My Keds back in the 60’s surely made me run faster and jump higher, didn’t they?

The burden of proof is not on disproving efficacy, the burden of proof is on proving efficacy. I could say that eating dog poop cures cancer, and that does not make it an effective treatment just because there is no definitive research that says eating dog poop does not cure cancer, therefore I'm going to eat dog poop for 3 meals a day.

And that article (from Chinese doctors) is an article reprinted on the NIH site, not a statement or study conducted by the NIH. The clear indication is that at best it is inconclusive and that there is extreme bias of the placebo effect in studies that show mild efficacy which are the primary source for this metadata paper.

Unlike a good study, you can't do a good double blind controlled experiment as there is no way for the practitioner or patient to be blind to the administration of treatment, so these studies are ripe for incredible bias. The consensus is this is pseudoscience.

My wife, with her Ph.D. in Biomechanics & Movement Science, would agree with you, Ragman. She thinks it's a bunch of nonsense.

The Rock posted on Insta the other day about his first cupping session. That'll probably spark a huge resurgence of it.

I personally don’t care but the original post was very adamant that it was pseudoscience and fake and proven as such. Obviously not true...

No, it's obvious to anyone in the medical community who is not an Eastern medicine quack.

You can't prove a negative; it's an impossible bar and not an angle to take in any discussion. You can, however, point out that there is no evidence for something (like dog poop curing cancer).
