We are simply cheating ourselves by not playing pass offense between the numbers. Most of the potent offenses in the game these days do so. Watching the MAC games this week as well as Baylor last night was a reminder. We have the athletes to do so. Baylor and Bowling Green ran a post, dig, or seem pattern every series. When you limit your pass game to outside the numbers, it brings a 12th defender into play, the sideline!

I wonder if that is directly tied to having a True FR QB who is still learning a lot. Dunno.

I think there's something to this.

None of the people we are playing, outside of Ben Lewis, show the ability, or desire, to go across the middle.
Do we have examples of this? Parris has made a bunch of catches over the middle. I don't really remember seeing many WR routes over the middle, could be wrong.

The play by play guy called out Estime for cutting off a route over the middle last week. Eric's pass fortunately fell incomplete.

Tight ends have caught about 18% of completed passes so far this year and most were in the middle of the field.

Ish, erv, and ben could get more targets over the middle or even in the seam. Seems as though ish is running go and out patterns all day. Ben and ish have the 200+ body types to absorb the contact. From a defensive perspective, an offense that threatens the entire width of the field is tougher to defend. I know most of us were hoping to see custis and enoicy in the mix by now being beasts in the middle.

You must bee watching different games than I am. We run plenty of routes in the middle.
There are no seams in man, of course, and some teams have played more man against us than zone.

with avant out this week and lewis back i wonder if lewis spends more time as a wr or xb

I thought lack of serviceable tight ends had something to do with this for sure. Not sure why we don't dump the ball to a RB in the flat more. Maybe someone with more football sense than I can explain that.

As I mentioned, TEs have caught 18% of our completed passes so far this season. How much are TEs expected to do?

Were those catches in the middle of the field?

Most teams use the pick or rub routes to get the outside guys free coming into the middle. Throws in the middle of the field are easier for a QB and it's how teams get away from tough man or find gaps in zones where you get faster guys on LB's. Throwing hooks and curls to the TE are not the same as hitting Erv cutting across the field in-stride and in space where he can use his agility.

I think if you check the replays you will see those routes. One of the issues if we don't see enough of anything. We are only running about 70-75% of the plays we normally would.

Almost a full half and dungeys pick six was predictable bc we just refuse to use the immense real estate between the numbers!!!
