Gottlieb is tearing Doyle apart

He (Gottlieb) basically said 'we agree to disagree' he's taking JB on his word that he had no knowledge prior and he was defending his coach.. He thinks JB will finish the year but retire soon and his rep will be a bit 'tarnished' and should be able to select his successor.. that last view was odd.. does he have something against hop?

Gottlieb just may have forgotten that Mike Hopkins is the Chosen Successor.
After all, wasn't that selection made about 16 years ago now?

If JB does not get pushed out, which he shouldn't, I think he coaches another two years. He'll get to 900 and hang em up. He has handled adversity before, not of this scale, mind you, but he's a pretty strong guy. If he remains coach, he'll leave when he's ready. I don't see him leaving after the season just because of the media.

If he survives & the story dies, in 6-months it'll barely get a mentiuon.

Remember that Baylor Murder Case? Or Duke Lacrosse?

The news cycle move too fast- there's always another story waiting to happen & thats why the next 72 hrs are crucial for JB.

Funny thing is.. if he survives he may delay his retirement to 'de-tarnish' is rep

He's not going anywhere... unless more comes out, there is nothing tying him to any sort of knowledge or involvement. So firing him (and Hopkins then has to go too IMO), will be a 50/50 split. Ease public opinion, but put yourself in a very difficult rebuilding process. As long as JB truly didn't know, which I believe he didn't, then I think the university heals itself faster by letting JB stay, rather than clean house and try to rebuild the program.

Exactly. This wouldn't surprise me. Not because of his rep, but because his job won't be finished.

Katz and Gottlieb had a discussion about all of this on their ESPNU College Basketball Podcast ... here's what was said (roughly)

Gottlieb says take him at his word that he knew nothing. He made these statements, but I think he keeps his job. I think where this hurts Syracuse is the future, specifically Mike Hopkins' future. This doesn't take away from his success on the floor, his success of his work with coaches v cancer. But it does hurt his power within the university when he walks away. Previously, Boeheim was strong enough to hand pick Hopkins as his successor. I'm guessing here that when Boeheim retires, whether it be this year or 5 years from now, I do think that this speeds up that process unfortunately. Even if he did not know anything, I think this hurts his ability to choose who will be the next Head Coach at Syracuse. Which totally changes the future of this program and maybe Hopkins doesn't get the job.

Katz went on to agree. There is a new administration which can always be a factor with future hires. Does not know if Hopkins has a written contract signed, or if it's just a verbal agreement. But he does think that Hop could be in jeopardy.

Very good point. And if he's still coach at SU, he'll still be on the Olympic team as well. I don't see Coach K or Jerry Colangelo throwing him under the bus.

Agree...the crappy thing is that the Fines caused all this, not JB. But in the end if JB retires soon of his own accord because that was the plan all along, some jackhole will claim he retired because of this and not because he was ready to.

If Gross and Nancy like Hopkins, and I have to believe they do or he would not have stuck around as long as he has, then Hop gets the job. He is a great guy, a great recruiter, and a strong face for the University. He has nothing to do with this crap. I will disagree with Gottlieb and Katz on the Hopkins take.

I would absolutely hate to see Mike Hopkins punished (in a round about way) because of this mess.

But, if we see Hop take a head coaching job at another school after this season, the writing may very well be on the wall.

ESPN had an article in 2007 that Hopkins contract was reworked to include succession language...my guess is they'll honor that unless more details emerge that make a wholesale clean out necessary.
