While talking on his show about the PSU/Sandusky case this morning Dougie revealed what UND said when they dismissed him from the basketball program.

They called him into the office and said, we are going to say that you got home sick and that our style of play wasn't suited for your game. That is what their official press release said. The students whose credit cards were stolen said wait a moment and went to the papers and told the truth.

Gottlieb said there was a saying at Oklahoma State that if you passed wind on the other side of campus, the basketball office would know immediately. That the timetable is everything in the PSU case. Why at the prime of his career would this guy retire unless the university said this is the way we are going to deal with your current allegations. No one will ever know the truth.

No question in my mind they asked him to retire in 99 to make this go away. None.

So could BF being taken off the recruiting trail have some significance (beyond him not being a great recruiter)?

It certainly could. But, as you noted, Billy Celuck, Greg Davis, and James Thues might have had something to do with it also.

Makes a lot of intuitive sense.

It appears doubtful, though, that this strategy was employed when Bernie Fine was removed as a recruiter.
First of all, there's no indication that anyone at SU knew about his behavior back in 2000.
I've seen nothing to indicate he did anything while recruiting.
And that move would not have curtailed his access to young boys.

By the way, I admire Gottlieb's honesty.
He's really become a first rate analyst & broadcaster.
But probably still can't hit free throws.

Wait, Billy Celuck was recruited? lol.

I always enjoyed seeing a 7-footer trying to sneak into an 8:30 class 40 minutes late.

Did he have the head band on? I felt like that was permanently stapled to his head.
I'm trying to remember if Billy was on campus for part of the time I was. I graduated in '93. I seem to remember him being there for the Moten era.

Billy's last year was 01-02.

wow. I was wayyyy off. For some reason, I thought he was at Cuse a lot earlier. Don't know what I was thinking.

Bernie could've been a dynamite recruiter - if only those kids' parents were not in the room.

Last time I saw Billy was at the State Fair he was mooching a cigarette from someone on the midway. He looked so gangsta with that ciggy hanging down from his mouth. Why wasn't he at the alumni game for Midnight Madness. Bet he'd get a rousing welcome.

Berni's ability to recruit went down when Laurie became a right of passage.

Ha! Wasn't that the game at MSG where both teams had their white uniforms?? For some reason, we had our white uniforms and only our orange jerseys, so we wore white and orange.

The story is that the tourney organizers told both teams that they'd be the home team, so both teams brought their white uniforms. Upon arriving at MSG, they told SU that they'd be the visitors. A police-escorted trip back to the team hotel in Queens eventually solved the problem.

He was in my freshman world religions class in 1998. Other great story was him punching out the window at Lucy's.

shandeezy's picture is the ultimate shot of Ebony & Ivory (awful song, though it might be)...

Not my picture, Orangeyes posted it. But yeah, there is a stark...umm...pigment difference there.

That would have been plenty for me to say, "Hey Bern, why don't you sit this one out." Theus had some potential, I suppose, but that is not a particularly impressive group.

I believe Thues still shares the record for steals in a season.
