not many guys are gonna pass in that situation. i thought for sure he was gonna pull up and shoot. or drive and get stuffed. usually with that little time left the guy who gets the ball aint giving it up and it very rarely ends well. not easy to pass up literally a once in a lifetime shot, but he did. respek!

That was a masterful play drawn up by Jay Wright. Arachnid was first option to shoot if he got a lane or an open look. Jenkins was the trailer whose job it was to look for space on either side of Arachnid, whichever opened up from the D shifting. When Archie drove and drew 2 UNC defenders, he had an easy dump back to the trailer. The sin is that UNC had no one on Jenkins, this a guy that killed them most of the game. He was able to not only catch the pass unimpeded, but he was also allowed to step into his shot for full rhythm. Essentially Archie screened two players and gave Jenkins an open look he's probably seen 1000 times in practice.

Poor defense by UNC and ONIONS by Jenkins.

I hate to see you're right on this one...
so I guess I won't say anything at all!

But yeah, heady play no doubt about it.

whether it was drawn that way or not most players in that situation are gonna try to be the hero and take the potential championship winning shot.

After the way Wright lit up Arcisadfklsd earlier in the game, I don't think he'd want to be the one to crap on his play call haha. I could be wrong. He's a little punk, so anything is possible.

I was shocked that Roy let him just catch the inbounds pass so easily - no pressure at all, no doubling despite having no one covering Jenkins on the inbound. I can understand not wanting to foul but to play so passively - why leave Jenkins unguarded on the throw in if his defender wasn't going to give some pressure on the catch?

it was embarassing. your entire season is literally on the line and you play this passive backing off defense. still wondering who brice johnson was guarding.

Wish I could give 2 likes. 1 for the thread title, and 1 for my man crush on Arch.

I thought it was drawn up as a "hook and ladder/lateral" play, but the ESPN article sorta implies Jenkins was calling Arci for the ball, just because he was "open." Either way — beautiful play design if it was meant to be that way, and pretty nice playmaking for Arci to drive and give it up to a guy who didn't have to do the 'matriculation' and could just catch and pop. Wonder what would have been said if the shot didn't fall, though. That Arci should have taken it? If that had been Lebron, passing up the final shot, he'd have been crucified. But, that was the early Lebron, i guess.

Didn't Ochefu set a screen to get the ball inbounds? And wasn't nova in the bonus? Tie game, they couldn't foul and give them FTs. Or am i forgetting something? Yeah, it did seem a bit too easy to work the ball up the court, but in any situation, what are they going to do? Steal it from Arci? A double-team, leaving the other guys open, and/or inviting Arci to 'manipulate' himself into getting fouled? Carolina needed a Hakim Warrick or Tyler Lydon as a gamestopper.

After seeing that, it's kind of amusing to recall how many people argued that we couldn't possibly have been running a play for Cooney to pass against Pitt in the ACC Tourney because there wouldn't be enough time for all of that to happen in 6.7 seconds.

And it was ok that he pulled up from 3 with a few seconds left(and an open lane) because it left time for a rebound. LOL.

So happy for Cooney that he had such a strong tournament, and that Pitt game that felt so crushing is absolutely meaningless now.

Some of you must think JB is a liar.

I heard Jay Wright in an interview say that they have used that play several times over the course of the season, Poor job by Roy not putting pressure on the inbounds, and not defending that play better.

Yes, they run that play in practice, with Arcidiacano having the option to get his own shot, find a shooter on the wing, or dump it back to the trailer/inbounder as he ended up doing.

How do you know?

I'm so jealous of Jenkins. Every kid growing up playing basketball has dreamt of that shot over and over. He's going to be remembered forever.

That guy will never have to pay for a drink or meal in Philly for the rest of his life.

By the way, if you check the replay, they had an open shooter on the wing too. Pretty incredible how poorly UNC defended it.

A) Let Arch get it uncontested with no attempt to deny or slow him down.

B) Nobody ever picked up Jenkins.

C) Nobody ever picked up the shooter on the wing.

They ended up with two guys on Arch, and three standing in/near the paint, while they had Jenkins, someone on the wing, and also Ochefu open as the last trailer, had all else failed. Props to Jay Wright, but horrible job by Roy/UNC.

Jenkins had a really great tournament. He was a principle piece to get them there. I think he deserved it.
