It was when ESPNU has the spring practices on for certain Universities (it was a one day segment) I watched the Michigan one and it was really a back to the chalk board hand placement, technique, wrapping up, and defensive assignments the entire time. I heard Madison asked about it at the end and his quote was these guys just have no idea about technique and fundamentals. It was by far the most boring thing I had ever watched. Defensive Linemen where practicing shucking blocks with blocking pads using hand placement correctly depending what gap responsibility you had, Linebackers where working on wrapping up and doing reading drills, the corner back drills the whole time went over run support not once did the do 1 on 1’s. Looking back at it now it makes total sense. He knew that he had to break there bad habits by going back to basic teaching of football 101. I am sure other days they did more elaborate things but it was noticeable that the defense had just flat out awful technique and it had to be fixed asap. That's my main reason why I question Robinson’s job at Michigan. To me there is no way that the entire team should have been that bad in simple things you are taught at the pee wee level. In fairness to Robinson did some of the things that doomed him at Michigan have to do with scheme and youth? Absolutely however not wrapping up and not playing with any energy comes from bad coaching in my opinion. I have been wrong before on many things so I am sure a lot of people might disagree with my assessment with that said however I have never seen a worse defensive unit in football except for the Lions when they allowed 1,033 points over the 19 game losing streak.
