Aside from having to pony-up the money to buy-out his final 3 years, what sort of message would this send prospective coaching candidates? No coach in his right mind would apply for a job at a struggling program, knowing you have such a short leash.

- At some point it might be appropriate for Gross to have a "come to Jesus" meeting with Shafer, and make some changes to the coaching staff. I honestly like the defense under Bullough. Hackett was pilloried here his first couple of years, and then there was great wailing and gnashing of teeth when he left. Can MacDonald grow into the job? I don't know, but right now I think you would have a difficult time making a case that his recruiting prowess trumps the overall ineptitude of the offense.
