Hackett in the booth

Beat me to the post! This is the first time all year (I think) that he has been in the booth. I thought that lack of viewing the whole field from above was a bigger negative than any benefit of being on the sideline with the offense! Now if he can only figure a way to beat press coverage!

Seemed to me that Marrone was yelling at him on the headset a lot while we were on offense.

My guess is that most OCs prefer to be in the booth. I'm not sure if that is the best option with this team this year.

Wherever the OC is he needs to open to what the defense is doing and any tendencies the defense is showing. If the OC is rigid and stuck to a plan and anxious to run certain plays that worked in prep then he's not open and flexible. The OC can control the prep during the week and the game plan. Once the game begins the control is out the window and it's time to respond. It's like studying for an exam in school, and once the exam begins you solve each problem presented or answer each question asked.

If the defense runs what you expected, great. You still have to look for tendencies and respond to the reality on the field. The game calling is more like art than math in that sense. You cannot force plays because you want them to succeed. If the defense shows a scheme you didn't expect then you obviously need to adapt. At a certain point you need to know your team well enough to be able to make changes swiftly, and if you do that well the opposing team will probably go back to what you thought they would do in the first place. It's play-to-play-play for the entire game with much more flexibility than control.

It was our worst game on O this year. I thought Hackett had his worst game, as well as Nassib. Hopefully there was no correlation. IMO you absolutely have to have an O coach in the booth to make observations from up top. I think it was silly that we had none the first 4 games. But it doesn't have to be the OC. The last 5 games he was on the sidelines. I wonder what the reason for the change was.

I think it's easier for the OC to see the field from the box, and for that reason most OCs prefer to call the game from the box. We have a young OC, and he is learning too. I do think someone needs to be on the sideline who can check in with the QB and help him to regulate his emotions.
