Hal Cohen

He's a Doctor of Radiology.

Everyone will glow in the dark.
Funny story about Dr. Hal Cohen, we were in a lot of classes together and I played quite a few pick up games against and with him in Archbold. Every rec league player thought they were faster and better than Hal and people tried to show him up in those pick up games...but Hal was very crafty, quicker than he looked on TV, and was a dead eye shooter. Was a really talented dude in the classroom and on the court...

Yes. Played with him many times during the off season. He was like a Harlem Globetrotter at Archbold with crazy behind the head passes and double fakes. But when playing on the SU team, he was usually the slowest player on the court. Really made me appreciate the quickness of college basketball players!

I just posted on the Sadiq thread, I have been talking to Jimmy Lee here and also some of the basketball staff about Jimmy working with the team on free throws. Jimmy was even better than Hal. Jimmy held the FT % record from when he graduated in 1975 until Gerry broke it. All seem interested in my idea of Jimmy coming in to help.

And while we are at it. Let's retire the jerseys of both Lee and Rudy hackett. Rudy is a no brainer and Lee hit the biggest shot in Syracuse history up to that point. Their only weakness was that they played for the wrong Head coach

Hal was only a 74 percent free throw shooter for his career.

Cohen made 598 straight foul shots at the end of practice when he played high school ball in Canton. His dad was a coach and he would teach shooting by telling players to get it up and over the phone booth. Today, kids would have no idea what he’s talking about. It’s funny that just down the road from my house is an old phone booth sitting in their front yard. I think of Stan Cohen every time I see it.

I have a crazy theory to throw in on this thread. I believe our defense has been so lights out this year partly BECAUSE the whole team is making up for the horrible FT shooting.

Time and time again we've seen these guys make big plays and get stops on defense and hustle their butts off after they miss a free throw. It's like mentally they are a mess at the line but they are so afraid to let the team down they overcompensate on defense to make it up on the next defensive possession or two. It's also the reason I believe we saw us battle back against Houston when that was never going to happen in years past.

I haven't seen a Syracuse team in years play that way. With no prior year bias we are #2 in the country sandwiched between Duke and Houston in Defensive efficiency per teamrankings.

So as much as the free throws just seem like a lose lose lose situation I believe there may be a silver lining that the team goes that much harder on D.

The hope is that when the free throws come on line and the Defense stays we are going to be great.

He played with Marty Headd, and fast Eddie Moss who would have made anyone look slow.

I remember Eddie and Bob Snyder hosting the post game shows for a while. Snyder did with Leo for a time as well. Snyder always referred to Eddie as "Fast" on the show.
