We just love saving our dumb bs for the 4th quarter. Give Thomson a slight pass on that one play since it was a seriously tight gap on that pass from Spallina and he had guys closing in on him fast (and we scored immediately after on man up). McCarthy there is just no excuse for that. No backup and not even a serious need to shoot behind the back. We were still getting good looks on offense and should have just slowed it down to get a quality look. The worst stretch was right before that play. We execute an offensive possession perfectly, Leo draws a slide and we move the ball quickly around the horn to Spallina who feeds Hiltz with a point blank look on the crease. He somehow gets stuffed and then gets a penalty right after on the ride. Then in the middle of the penalty kill, Kol has the bright idea to wack their guy right on the nuts with a massive windup check. They score on man up right after they throw the flag on that, and we are forced to run out the clock on our next possession since we are man down. Then we get the ball right after on the ride and McCarthy does that. What a NIGHTMARE! 11 mins left in the game and 14-13 Harvard when that sequence started. 6 mins left and 15-13 Harvard when we finally get the ball back on O. When we have little room for error is when we make our most errors. Personally, I find it hard to blame Pat March and the offensive scheme/personnel choices. Even after that we generate a quality look for Leo in 6on6 and he takes an eternity winding up the shot, giving their defender time to get in the way and block it. Leo later makes a similar mistake on man down, telegraphing his shot with a huge windup and the goalie makes a stop. So many different guys failed to come up in the clutch, that it is hard to see how it ends differently if we rearrange the attack and middie lines. This crap has happened so many times now that is has to be related to Gait and the mentality he encourages. How exactly I do not know. But when you can give a similar autopsy to so many of our stretches late in games, something is off. Tried to ignore it last season since we still got a bunch of quality wins, but it can't be ignored now. If the offense/staff does not find a way to clean up these late game performances, the combination of that and our mediocre defense will kill this season, just like last year.
