WRs were identified in camp as being the weak link of the team.

On a night when the passing game was totally out of sync, and only 1 WR caught a pass [unbelievably], here is the stat line for a guy who hasn't made much of a contribution his entire career:

Pretty freaking remarkable. No idea if he can keep it up -- probably not -- but it looks like Custis is going to be a much bigger contributor this year. He was terrific tonight -- channeled his inner Etta-Tawo.

Kudos to Jamal Custis.

Lot of talk on this board about having blind faith in dino's ability to get WR talent. That WRs would be falling over themselves to get in the up tempo O (myself included). Hmmm...

Oh, there's plenty of good talent in the WR pipeline. Problem is, it is all true frosh / redshirt frosh, and entirely inexperienced / unproven.

Butler and Riley just dont have it.

Gotta say, I thought the same about Jamal last year.

Wasn’t it him who ran a fly, dropped the pass, fell, and got hurt early last year? At that point, I was thinking “this guy doesn’t have it.”

Butler has struggled badly, but you never know.

Riley is tough to get excited about because he’s SO small. Feel like he makes Jamal Riddle, Mo Jackson, and Estime look big?

If nobody else steps up soon, I say throw them in there if they’re eligible to play.

What the worse that could happen? They catch LESS than zero passes?

Hope that Michigan State 4 Star transfer is a lot better than the Arkansas 4 star transfer we had a few years ago.

Butler was a non factor today. He dropped every ball that hit his hands. I was frankly shocked as I thought that he was our best returning receiver from all the preseason press. I hope Custis can keep it up and be the next prime receiver for the team, but I sure hope another wr or two start catching some balls.

Wow. I didn't realize Custis was the only receiver to catch a pass. I'm ready to be done with Riley. Maybe he has some speed, but I rarely see him getting wide open and wonder when the next time is that he'll catch something other than what the opposing team kicks to him. I hope we see some youngsters against Wagner. We need to start bringing in young guys that can beat out upperclassmen that aren't stars. I'm hoping some of those are currently on the roster.

His one handed grab for his second TD was a huge momentum shifter and probably ensured our victory.
I agree. His over the shoulder catch was pretty amazing too. Not bad for a guy with the rep for questionable hands. Amba had the same rep at Maryland and exploded as a senior. Butler has that rep now, but it goes to show it can still click with guys late.

I had to Google who that Arkansas WR was that came here - Quinta Funderburk - I totally did not remember that player as he had absolutely no production for the Cuse in two seasons (3 reps 50 yds total). He left the team as a grad transfer.

I had such high hopes when we had a 4 star recruit transferring in from an SEC school.

We’ve got a highly recruited WR and RB from major schools eligible next year. Both of them got on the field and showed something at their first schools though. If I recall, Funderburke didn’t do anything at Arkansas either so I feel much better about these guys.

Definitely a great game from Custis. His hands! Unexpected and we needed it BADLY. Seriously though, how many routes does he know how to run? We’ll need to get some other types of yardage from out WRs somehow. Hopefully the young cats get up to speed quickly and get healthy. That was abysmal from them collectively tonight.

Butler quit on a few routes
Wouldn't have caught it anyways.

Don't mean to be rude to the player but I think this is an experiment we can move on from and go younger.

That was even better than the Custis I thought we recruited.

One thought - redshirting Custis that one season has already ended up being a big decision.

Was awesome and an exploited matchup which he capitalized on. But yep, let's see if faster acc safeties or nickel corners make it more difficult for him when he runs slot deep routes.
