So for them to capitalize on the one time that SU dropped the ball, and suddenly turn themselves relevant, always felt fake to me.  House of cards.  May never tumble to its previous depths.  But also is the big reason why that brand never took off.  No one trusts it because they were dogsh  for the first 100 years, and no matter what any long time Rutgers fan will tell you, no one in the college football world believed they were even trying to improve.
 
A school like Maryland, it's regional, a lot of SU alums in this area, and it has been an old rival who at least attempted to field a good team for much of its existence.  Had bumps for sure, and is going through a few more now.  Haven't we all?  It will be a conference rival, that's all.  We're never going to have anything like the big rivals.  Just isn't really possible for a lot of reasons.  But we should have some good conference rivalries, and I do think Maryland will be one that the fans of both schools look forward to.  In both football and hoops.
