He cannot explain the flagrant 1 rule to save his life. It's like a firing squad watching him try to answer questions from tru tv's "analysts".

In my opinion they should just scrap this stupid contact above the shoulders rule. It happened at least 5 times yesterday and was completely ridiculous each time.

It will get worse next season as more teams begin to abuse it, ala Duke flops.

I agree, I see a disturbing trend of defensive players crowding the ball and daring the ballhandler to clear them out. Coaches are adjusting and learning how to exploit the rule. Another reason, along with hand checking, and more charges called that should be blocking fouls that scoring is down and the game is incrementally uglier.

I'd hope that if they review a foul for a flagrant 1 and see that there was no contact made at all to warrant the flop they walk to that player and T him up right in his face. Or better yet T up the coach! That'd stop some of the flopping. I'm not recomending they review every flop, that woudl obviopusly be ridiculous. But if they're reviewing it anyway and see that the defensive player did indeed flop, throw the book at him. Something tells me that SU fans will very easily replace their most hated rival from the BE with one of their new conference brethren. Honestly I'd already cheer for the Hoyas against the Dukies.

to the point we'll have a brawl sooner rather than later. Maybe even before the end of the tournament if it happens in a tight situation.
Stupid rule the way it's written. I think they know it needs attention before next year.

Agreed. The elbow clear-out is an area of the game that should really police itself. If you don't want to take one on the chin, then don't get so damn close. Having such a stiff penalty enables dirty defense, which in turn, enables more elbows to the face.

It needs to be a judgement call. When you look at film, you can tell if someone is trying to someone with an elbow and when someone isn't. Triche clearly wasn't, and that should never be a foul.

This is especially true when good basketball coaching includes teaching kids how to use the rip technique to create space. If this continues to get called too tight, I may have to stop teaching this.

You cannot tell intent from video with any degree of certainty. You are flat wrong there.

This reminds me of the 80's when they instituted harsher fighting penalties in the BE because the number of fights was increasing. Funny thing, all the fights were during Georgetown games. Players were so frustrated by Georgetown's obvious but uncalled dirty play that eventually they took a swipe at someone. Officiate to the rules so you don't have frustrated players and you don't need extra penalties.

You're right about it being hard to tell. Case in point, I'm not so sure that Triche didn't make that move intentionally to move the guy back.

It's going to cost someone a game in this tournament. I just hope it isn't us.

Coaches should begin to teach kids how to rotate their upper body with their hips at the same speed. According to the rule, it's illegal to swing your elbows at a faster rate than your mid-section. If they're both going at the same speed, then you can elbow a guy in the face all you want, right? :noidea:
