However the scenario of keeping a HC too long and putting yourself in a bigger hole happens all the time.

Shafer has been here 7 years. The fact that the D looks so bad and there hasn't been many glimpses from the D youth is very concerning. Also the longer you wait to make a move the more you can waste your current young talent. I don't want to have to wait until Dungey is a SR to have a 2012 like season.
