Pat, (“20 Plus”) requested that I assemble some “net points” numbers on SU backcourts. I’ve already got the numbers dating back to 1980-81. There are numbers before that available on Orangehoops:
But they don’t have minutes played until 1980-81 and I like to look at things per 40 minutes. I’ll limit it to guards who have averaged 10 minutes per game. I went by the list of starting fives in the Media Guide, (which somehow lists Wendell Alexis as a guard in 1985-86), my memory, logic and the rebounding and assists stats to categorize who could be considered primarily a guard for each season.

It should be noted that the “Net Points” formula is just an attempt to summarize what’s in a box score. It doesn’t account for things not measured in the box score, such as sneaker-to-sneakier defense, knowing where you are supposed to be and what you are supposed to be doing in JB’s zone, getting loose balls, (which I think should be a stat), being a good teammate, a leader, etc. etc. I find that the most statistically productive players will tend to be the best in these areas, too. But I’ve never claimed that “net points” is a means by itself in evaluating players. It just adds up the numbers and is worth looking at.

Glossary: M= minutes per game, (the rest is per 40 minutes), P= points, R= rebounds A= assists, S= steals, B= blocks, MFG = missed field goals, MFT = miss free throws, TO = turnovers, PF = personal fouls.
NP: “net points”, (P+R+A+S+B) – (MFG+MFT+TO+PF) OE: “offensive efficiency” P-(MFG+MFT)
FG = “floor game” (R+A+S+B) – (TO+PF) or NP-OE.

If you are looking for statistical matches for our current guards, I’d suggest Buddy = Marius Janulis 96-97, (although marius rebounded more than I remember), Joe = GMAC 2002-03, (but not quite) and Kadary = Billy Edelin the year after that.

If you want to see a couple of ‘loaded’ back courts, have a look at 85-86 and 11-12.

It doesn’t account for things not measured in the box score, such as sneaker-to-sneakier defense, knowing where you are supposed to be and what you are supposed to be doing in JB’s zone, getting loose balls, (which I think should be a stats), being a good teammate, a leader, etc.

FG = “floor game” (R+A+S+B) – (TO+PF) or NP-OE.

This is fun to look back at, as I can forget teams. Thank you for putting this together.

I got sad when I saw those squads from ‘10-‘14, we were so strong. Interesting data.

With these numbers I rest my case. Round 3 coming

Just remember:

"It should be noted that the “Net Points” formula is just an attempt to summarize what’s in a box score. It just adds up the numbers and is worth looking at."

I should have added "forcing the defense to guard you because of what you might do".

Our guards were fantastic in the 80s and early 2010s. The 2 golden eras. Scoop and Santifer are really underated. Trevor and Frank way overated.

It doesn’t account for things not measured in the box score, such as sneaker-to-sneakier defense, knowing where you are supposed to be and what you are supposed to be doing in JB’s zone, getting loose balls, (which I think should be a stats), being a good teammate, a leader, etc.

FG = “floor game” (R+A+S+B) – (TO+PF) or NP-OE.

Man this is great stuff!!! Thanks for putting this together!

I arbitrarily set the minimum production for a starting player at 10.0NP/40. Like a lot of things with this formula, it seems to work out: it passes the eye or the memory test. So here is the “ten point club” (limit of one year per player):

Sherman Douglas 86-87 21.1
Eric Santifer 82-83 21.0
Pearl Washington 85-86 20.9
Rafael Addison 85-86 20.1
Stevie Thompson 88-89 19.9

Lawrence Moten 93-94 19.6
Dion Waiters 10-11 17.3 Kadary Richmond (17.5) will have this spot if he maintains this pace
Billy Edelin 02-03 16.9
Adrian Autry 93-94 16.8
Jonny Flynn 08-09 16.7

Scoop Jardine 09-10 16.5
Michael Carter-Williams 12-13 16.1
Andy Rautins 09-10 15.4
Michael Gbinije 15-16 14.9
Tyler Ennis 13-14 14.7

Greg Monroe 86-87 14.5
John Gillon 16-17 14.4
Gerry McNamara 05-06 14.2
Brandon Triche 09-10 13.9
Eric Devendorf 06-07 13.3

Michael Lloyd 94-95 13.3
Jason Hart 98-99 12.8
Tyus Battle 17-18 12.7
Kueth Duany 02-03 12.6
Earl Duncan 87-88 12.0

Matt Roe 88-89 12.0
Joe Girard 19-20 11.8 Joe is exactly where he was last year.
Alan Griffin 00-01 11.8
Lazarus Sims 95-96 11.8
DeShaun Williams 99-00 11.8
Marty Headd 80-81 11.6

Trevor Cooney 13-14 11.5
James Thues 01-02 11.2
Gene Waldron 82-83 11.1
Mike Hopkins 89-90 10.8

Sonny Spera 83-84 10.2
Tony Bland 98-99 10.1
Michael Brown 84-85 10.0
Buddy Boeheim 19-20 10.0
Buddy is at 9.8 this year. He was 9.9 as a freshman. it is what it is.

Interesting chart. One thing that stood out for me is that Erich Santifer rarely gets the love he deserves as an SU great.

You shoulda seen him in the 1981 NIT final, The refs fouled out 4/5 of our starting line-up but they forgot to foul out Eric, who got us into the overtime before Nolan Richardson's Tulsa team finally won it 84-86. Eric had 29p 9r 3a 3s in that one.

Well, 3/5. Look at the fouls called: 31 on us, 16 on them. My recollection is that we had pulled ahead by 6-7 points midway through the second half when Richardson called a time out. he didn't spend any of it with the players, just talking calmly with the refs, who then called 18 of the next 19 fouls on Syracuse. the announcers for the game said they were sad that this was was decided by the referees,, not the players. The color guy was Digger Phelps, moonlighting form his Notre Dame job.

Santifer was before my time so I’m not well informed on those teams, but one thing that sticks out in that era is we guys who put up big numbers, but didn’t win as many games as the teams before or after them.

The "Tri-Captains" era, (Rautins, Santifer and Bruin), was similar to this one in that we were a 'donut' team. After we lost Bouie and Schayes, we had Andre Hawkins, a 6-6 power forward trying to play center, (as Guerrier, who is slimmer and more talented, basically does on offense for this team). The Tri-Captains were good but the rest of the team wasn't. JB has always said that his biggest recruiting regret was not getting Sam Perkins, who played center on the Michael Jordan UNC teams. The story goes that he was all set to come here and fill the donut hole but that Dean Smith gave his girlfriend a scholarship.

With the same disclaimer I put in the OP and gave to 20 Plus, above.

I don't want somebody calling in and saying "Steve proved that Buddy stinks" or that "Kadary is an All-American".

There are a million angles to take on this, because no matter how you slice it B. Boeheim is one of the worst starting guards in Syracuse history.

But here's another: Win Share Per 40 Minutes, which takes into account all facets of the game and spits out a number that allows you to compare players and how much impact they have on winning.

The reason I have it "per 40 minutes" is to normalize the data, because not everyone has the same amount of playing time -- of course.

This year, Buddy Boeheim's Win Share Per 40 Minutes is .081. This ranks last among all Syracuse starters. For reference, Quincy Guerrier is at .211 (extremely good), or about 2.5 times more impactful on SU's winning.

Last year, Buddy Boeheim was at a .100. Also the worst among all SU starters. Bourama Sidibe was .171 and Elijah Hughes was .164. (I am leaving out Jesse Edwards' team-leading .177, based on limited sample size.)

Going back through College Basketball Reference, Buddy Boeheim is the worst SU starter since Kaleb Joseph's VERY memorable 2014-15 season (.045). Here are the other comparable players that have been below .100 as a starter at SU, through 1999-00:

Frank Howard (2018-19): .084
Frank Howard (2017-18): .088
Matthew Moyer (2017-18): .096
Fab Melo (2010-11): .087

DeShaun Williams (2000-01): .083

I doubt your name will be dropped but these stats are going to be used by Pat to clap back at JB after JB last Thursday went after Pat and then he nuked Kadary and analytics after the BC gams clearly with a mind to take a shot at Pat. When Pat said Kadary is the most exciting player on the team and in a while but JB had to go at Kadary to basically say hey Pat go get your shinebox.

Now these stats are going to be used to go back at JB.

JB probably won't be any more impressed with 'Net Points' than he was with +/-. ;)

JB seems very defensive right now. I’m not sure turning up the heat will accomplish anything but getting him to double down.
