Minutes played are available dating back to the 1980-81 season. I decided to record the minutes played by the starters, (as identified on pages 156-157 of the 2019-20 Media Guide), to look for any historical trends. I’m thinking that as JB has aged, he’s stuck with his top guys more than as a younger coach. I recall reading a Bill James book about baseball managers saying that there is a trend of veteran managers being more willing to go longer with their starting pitchers than younger managers. This may be a similar situation. The Media Guide sometimes lists 6 starters. In those cases I chose the five players who played the most minutes. I‘ll list them in the order of C-PF-SF-SG-PG, with rebounds determining the PF vs. SF and assists determining PG vs. SG. I’ll just use last names.

There’s not a strong trend there but I do think JB has alternated people at certain possessions the last couple of decades more so than before and that pulls the averages down. Let’s look at the number of players who play at least 35.0 minutes per game:

That looks like computer code. It does show a greater trend to stick with a core of guys although it’s not 5 guys at once and it’s been going on for quite a while.

I see a general trend of relying on the starters more on the worst teams. That could mean that the unwillingness t go to the bench makes those teams worse or it could mean that those teams were worse because the bench was worse, (which could mean that recruiting is the real issue). I tend to think the latter is the real truth. I also think that we’ve had an awful lot of good teams here and we have been spoiled as fans. But that not a bad thing to be.

Agree w/ you the teams were probably worse because the bench was not as good. And as you suggest, I see that as the symptom not the disease.
