IL: Tuesday Night Roundup: Syracuse Rolls, Stony Brook Wins, Lafayette Upsets Monmouth Syracuse 11, Hobart 4 The Orange used a multi-faceted offensive attack to bulldoze the Statesmen and retain ownership of the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. Hobart scored the opening goal but would not get another until Syracuse had scored eight goals of its own; different members of the Orange offense scored seven of those eight goals with Nate Solomon netting two, including a highlight-reel finish sans a hand. One handed goals — so hot right now. The first half was as dominant a run as Syracuse has had all season and a big part of it was its defense. Nick Mellen collected three takeaways by himself, Dom Madonna made four of his nine saves, and the Syracuse team collected 15 of its 27 groundballs. Hobart would come back into the game, out-scoring Syracuse 3-1 in the third quarter, but had no answer for the Orange attack in the final 15 minutes. Stephen Rehfuss finished with three goals and an assist, but his chances were earned and the result of a balanced 6 on 6 attack. Were it not for several stellar stops from Hobart goalkeeper Sam Lucchesi, the game could have gotten out of hand. Costly turnovers and penalties in the second half may mar the game for some fans, but the first half was a master class of a team coming into their own, trusting the systems on both ends of the field. The game finished 11-4, but that first half felt like watching the origin of a new horror movie villain. Hobart is 4-6 on the season and 1-1 in the NEC with four conference games remaining. They will do battle against conference foe Robert Morris this Saturday. No. 8 Syracuse will travel to Cornell for an Upstate conflict next week.
