Walt Sweeney is roughing the kicker on the last play against Notre Dame in 1961. Syracuse was ahead 15-14 and the irish were attempting a 56 yard field goal, unheard of at the time. SU pointed out that the rules at the time said that the kicking team became the defensive team when the ball left the kicker's foot and thus the game should have been allowed to end on the unsuccessful field goal attempt. The NCAA said they were right but Rule #1 says the score at the end of the game is the final score, meaning it can't be overturned later even if a mistake was made. SU pointed out hat by rule , the game ended on the unsuccessful kick. The NCAA still refused to take action and told the Orange that the only way they could get credit fro the win was if Notre Dame agreed to concede the game to them because of the mistake. they refused.

The rule was changed the next year so that the kicking team remained the offensive team until the end of the play.
