How does a 14 or 16 team conference work?

Can someone explain how the schedule will work and how many OCC games are played by both 14 & 16 team conference?

My guess would be that a 16 team conference is divided into two eight team divisions. The divisions play a round robin against each other. That gives you seven conference games. Then there would likely be one or two crossover games with the other division per year. One or both would likely be rotating but one could be an annual game.
