The relevancy thread got me to thinking how SU's overall athletic brand compares on a team by team basis among P5 teams. In comparing below, on a conference by conference, team by team basis, I placed teams in one of three categories: SU has a bigger/better brand - the brands are equivalent - the team has a bigger/better brand than SU.

What makes up a brand? Subjectivity that's what! Success and history of FB and BB predominates. Non revenue sports success counts some, but only if that sport sees the light of day in ESPN programming. Iconic stadiums/arenas/coaches count some. If one team is outstanding in one sport (e.g. Alabama) - that counts as something of a factor. Outstanding academics is included as a minor factor but only impacts a few schools (e.g. Stanford, Duke). Taken together, all of the factors = perception. Apparel sales (SU historically ranks about 30) would be a pretty good brand test if one were to rank, rather than compare on a team by team basis. Some of these are pretty tough calls. Tried to go without my orange covered glasses. Here we go.

ACC
SU has better brand - Wake - NCST - BC - Ga Tech - VT
Equivalent brand - Virginia - Miami - Clemson
Better brand than SU - Carolina - Louisville - Duke

Big 10
SU better brand - Rutgers (duh) - Indiana - Illinois - Northwestern - Purdue - Minnesota
Equivalent - Nebraska - Maryland - Iowa?
Better brand than SU - Michigan - Ohio St. - Wisconsin - Michigan St. - Penn St.?

Big 12
SU better brand - Iowa St. - Baylor - Texas Tech - TCU - Kansas St.
Equivalent - WV - Okie St. - Kansas
Better brand than SU - Texas - Oklahoma

PAC 12
SU better brand - Colorado - Utah - Wash St. - Oregon St. - Arizona St.
Equivalent - Arizona - Cal - UCLA - Washington
Better brand than SU - USC - Stanford - Oregon

SEC
SU better brand - Miss. - Miss. St. - Vandy - Arkansas
Equivalent - Kentucky - S. Carolina - Georgia - Mizzou - Auburn - A&M
Better brand than SU - Bama - Florida - LSU

Basically I've got SU square in the middle. Not bad for a private northeastern university.

Good work. I agree with it, mostly.

The problem for football, is that the national media doesn't see us that way. Lots of damage has been done to the perception of the program. We need some W's and some nationally relevant players. And I think we can get there.

Hopefully with a fwd looking AD, great coaching, and a top 30 recruiting class :).

Missing a few schools. No FSU or ND in the ACC, and they would both be "better brand than SU" category.

Some of those I disagree with, especially on the Equivalent line. I would put all of these schools below us in terms of brand. Yes our football is down below where we want it but in terms of branding, we have a top 10 basketball brand, maybe top 5. Mizzou, Texas A&M, Cal, Washington, Okie St, WVU, Iowa, Maryland, Virginia. I don't think those teams have overall a better brand than SU. MAYBE Texas A&M because of the years when Manziel was there, but they'll come back down a bit now.

My 2 cents.

Virginia Tech has 3 ACC titles since 2005. Their brand is WAY better than our brand. We have more history and a NC, but our brand isn't better than their brand until we have consecutive top 25 seasons and become relevant again.

Today, the SU brand = The color orange, the 2-3 zone, and the carrier dome.

The football program is dead brand wise. Consider it 1990s Apple (meaning, some innovative thinking could save it and help it flourish).

All athletics - not just football.

If its all-sports I would still put VPI on par with our brand. We are an elite basketball brand and LAX in the spring, but FB which is the biggest money maker and most important matters is non-existent. We really need a magical FB season our brand would improve greatly.

winning != brand

This is totally correct. Again, look at the computer space. Toshiba, samsung, sony, etc, all make superior products to Apple (at least spec wise). Yet they sell for half the price and only sell a fraction of them.

For a more related example, the knicks are currently valued as the 2nd most valuable NBA franchise by Forbes. The Spurs are 11th.

The bottom line is that we have a better brand and more of a National reach than most schools. When we start winning football games we will sky rocket for two reasons. One ESPN and others are hungry for a Northern football schools to do well outside of Pstate. Two we will soon have the added exposure of the ACC network. What ESPN did for Syracuse Basketball the ACC network can do for Syracuse football. Granted it will be on a smaller scale but if you look at the success we have had landing kids from the south since we joined the ACC just imagine the increased success we will have when their family and friends can watch them the ACC network.

Not bad.

I'd say the over Syracuse Athletics brand is associated with the Dome, Boeheim, freezing cold snow, 2-3 zone, used to be good in football and (some) reference to lacrosse.

Apple is an interesting association. I'd say Volkswagon might be better as it was hot in the 60s and early 70s, then had a period of decline and was resurrected in the mid-90s...then again a decade later. Some innovation that plays back to heritage.

fla st and nd better for sure, i also think ucla has a better brand than Syracuse as well.

hoop, the Rose Bowl, LA, palm trees, campus, women, iconic logo.

maybe its the Orange glasses but, i think s carolina, mizzou, iowa & wash are below Syracuse.

Funny - those were pretty much the exact teams I had the hardest time categorizing.

spurrier helps but all the d!ckholes wearing c0cks hats hurts.

I think it has to do with the fact that Syracuse is a northern school (in NY with NYC alums galore) that is pretty good academically. The schools you mentioned are either sub-par academically, located in the heartland or out west (east coast bias is real).

These all factor into a brand.
