The relevancy thread got me to thinking how SU's overall athletic brand compares on a team by team basis among P5 teams. In comparing below, on a conference by conference, team by team basis, I placed teams in one of three categories: SU has a bigger/better brand - the brands are equivalent - the team has a bigger/better brand than SU.
What makes up a brand? Subjectivity that's what! Success and history of FB and BB predominates. Non revenue sports success counts some, but only if that sport sees the light of day in ESPN programming. Iconic stadiums/arenas/coaches count some. If one team is outstanding in one sport (e.g. Alabama) - that counts as something of a factor. Outstanding academics is included as a minor factor but only impacts a few schools (e.g. Stanford, Duke). Taken together, all of the factors = perception. Apparel sales (SU historically ranks about 30) would be a pretty good brand test if one were to rank, rather than compare on a team by team basis. Some of these are pretty tough calls. Tried to go without my orange covered glasses. Here we go.
ACC
SU has better brand - Wake - NCST - BC - Ga Tech - VT
Equivalent brand - Virginia - Miami - Clemson
Better brand than SU - Carolina - Louisville - Duke
Big 10
SU better brand - Rutgers (duh) - Indiana - Illinois - Northwestern - Purdue - Minnesota
Equivalent - Nebraska - Maryland - Iowa?
Better brand than SU - Michigan - Ohio St. - Wisconsin - Michigan St. - Penn St.?
Big 12
SU better brand - Iowa St. - Baylor - Texas Tech - TCU - Kansas St.
Equivalent - WV - Okie St. - Kansas
Better brand than SU - Texas - Oklahoma
PAC 12
SU better brand - Colorado - Utah - Wash St. - Oregon St. - Arizona St.
Equivalent - Arizona - Cal - UCLA - Washington
Better brand than SU - USC - Stanford - Oregon
SEC
SU better brand - Miss. - Miss. St. - Vandy - Arkansas
Equivalent - Kentucky - S. Carolina - Georgia - Mizzou - Auburn - A&M
Better brand than SU - Bama - Florida - LSU
Basically I've got SU square in the middle. Not bad for a private northeastern university.
