Where else would SUAD revenue increase if the team has more wins/plays better/more entertaining? A bowl game, but the max for SU is about 2 million (the Texas Bowl was 1.7 million last year). My point: the additional revenue from additional wins is just not worth the trouble or the investment; they make plenty of money in other areas to worry about fielding a really good football team. And if Shafer is as good a dude as some say, that could be worth a lot to the university, more than another half-million in profit. Realistically, it would take a huge effort to even compete within the ACC regularly. This means Scott Shafer/cheap coachng staff for probably a few more years (he did go to bowl game) and lower-middle of the ACC. I assume that this is the university's thoughts because otherwise, they would be doing more to increase the revenue, right?
