I have been thinking about this and looking at it from a business perspective. What business in the greater Syracuse area has the ability to benefit the most from an association with SU athletes.
None of the obvious work. Wegmans Byrne Dairy they don't gain anything.

Next I looked at which business stands to lose the most if SU becomes second tier and it was very obvious. Restaurants Hotels and everything associated. Still which one.
The answer isn't one business. It's every business in Syracuse and it could be done by the city of Syracuse via its economic development commission.
The city of Syracuse should sponsor and support the athletes of Syracuse University. SU is Syracuse. If SU were to fail it would be a death blow to the city and the region. As Jake said SU is the only game in town.
Strong SU teams really helps the city. Unlike NY LA ect. Small cities like Syracuse need their Universities and Colleges to thrive. Take away SU and Syracuse dies. Same can be said for Lawrence KS Lincoln Nebraska Ithaca NY and others.
SU needs Syracuse to step up. I'm going to research the NIL rules but I believe it would be allowed.

Send this pitch to Walsh and the economic development corporation director.

By City of Syracuse, you really mean the "Taxpayers of Syracuse".

Good luck selling people on the idea that a kid who's already getting a $300,000 scholarship to a private university should also be handed your tax dollars.

They could always lay off more policemen and close another firehouse.

I really don't see the city going for this.

There’s already been a ton of local businesses working with players, but I’m going to guess that the people who ask these questions don’t log on to Twitter or Instagram.

18-22 year olds
Testosterone
Family and Strap Hangers looking for $$ and fame
Girlfriends and the Prosties
Slimey Agents
$500 dollar OL blocking for $500K QBs
Non-Revenue Athletes only getting $5 off gift cards to T-shirt World
Teams being bought
Fan alienation

Did you see the Buddy Hield fans wishing ill on Buddy Boeheim over his Buddy Buckets T-shirt? I'm not worried about Buddy B. as he has resources but some random 18-22 year olds are going to buy lots of unintended consequences.

That's the price of doing business IMO. It's a good learning experience and Buddy has had to deal with a lot of sht in his own backyard with our own fans so I am sure he can handle it.

Yeah this is the part I think is being understated. Buddy's family not only has resources for legal review but experience representing brands in the market. Even with schools offering guidance and counseling services perhaps, there are going to be some negative outcomes for players I wager either due to bad contracts, the IRS, AAU handlers, others mishandling the players money. That doesn't mean that what is happening overall is not good because it is but people are glossing over the negative outcomes that are very likely to happen as well.

I mean there’s moral hazard in every industry. This is not any different.

I can see new college classes being offered at Whitman.

I think that's part of Accelerate, but I learned this at Whitman 15 years ago myself under the regular SOM curriculum.

I don't disagree. However a strong SU really helps Syracuse so there is a chance. As you know the city and university have partnered on many projects over the decades so this wouldn't set a precedent and it doesn't need to be a massive investment.

IF - SU is going to fail because they can no longer compete in big time athletics than SU has bigger problems than NIL.

When I was a student I barely felt like I had enough time to study - and I wasn’t a student athlete. I can’t imagine how these young people are going to manage branding themselves even with expert help. I don’t think NIL is doing student athletes a kindness by adding this to their lives (although I agree with the NIL ruling).

Wonder who will be the first "broke college kid" in the NIL era.

As usual the devil is in the details. At this time the details are very sketchy. The same teams that were dropping bags illegally will most likely gain the most from the NIL and keep their dominance. Duke for example had good funding sources for players.

Duke hoops and Bama football are bought and paid for I don't see their fans being alienated.

Wouldn’t it even the playing field? Yes, the bag dropping will still happen, but schools that used to be punished will now not be punished.

My history at Syracuse, and things might have changed in the last 43 years, is that for the most part, citizens of Syracuse think the University's value to the city is greatly overrated. I am not arguing whether it is or isn't. Just that they think it is. With that in mind, I don't see them spending their tax dollars on athletes at Syracuse. I don't think I blame them. We don't have money for X but we did have money to spend on a running back or a basketball forward? That is getting his education for free while your kid can't afford to go to the University? That is a tough sale. Whether we have sports or whether we don't, the University is still going to be there.

I think neither party has a proper appreciation of the value they each provide.

All I'll say is...the coaches, school, boosters and whoever need to be extremely competitive in this or we will be afterthoughts in all of our sports. You have these big state schools preparing for this already/moving fast with players. Have to match that speed and willingness.

The economic impact of SU sports doing well would be exponentially greater than the cost. I sent an overview to both the Mayor and JW. Never up never in my friend.
