How will Syracuse try to avoid fan pileup that occurred at Clemson game?

So what should be done with some immediacy to mitigate the risk? Or should SU simply rationalize that it was a once in a decade occurrence and ignore the potential for a serious incident?

Get rid of concourse concessions. You can have walking vendors. Basketball is fine with the back court area. Football is a bigger issue. Sorry no more nachos for football. Unless you want delivery options. Food ordering app saves lines.

It is the reality of the situation.

Anyone that tries to dismiss what happened as 'not a big deal' should have their head examined. I'll also wager that they weren't one of those who were trapped in that situation. Operations staff should have a mitigation plan. Instead we get Mr Sala saying we sell out once a decade so why bother. They said the same thing with the Titanic, we don't need the lifeboats because it won't happen. But the reality is those concourses are so tight that it's a safety issue for smaller crowds as well, as in every weekend ACC home game.

This NEEDS to happen at a minimum. The most cost effective and functional solution if not the prettiest. If phase 3 tries to open up the exterior of the dome so that it sheds the fortress image, then maybe we can get our cake and eat it, too.

When the Done first opened crowd control was pretty good.

There were constant PA announcements explaining how to move in the concourses - “walk on the right”

We had big crowds for a number of years and the Dome experience was fine.

It’s amazing we survived the 80’s & 90’s.

Well done.

move 1/2 the food vendors to tents outside, move security to gates outside. it fixes the food cooking issues and moves all those lines outside the concourses.

another quick fix is managing those lines better. Set up those zig zag barrier deals like they have at banks to keep people in line narrowly bunched by the concession. Its sort of nuts how you need to cut through lines to walk down the concourse.

all kidding aside, I was in that mess with my kid and it was really scary -- like so scary I was planning on how to get my kid onto the concession stand counters if people started pushing a little. And it is shocking that the SU Facilities folks admitted that they were not even aware of the issue until they were asked for comment after the fact. It was a solid 20 minutes or more of not being able to move an inch and barely being able to breathe. Things didn't let up until a woman from the fire department climbed up on the concession stand and started directing traffic (which was a few minutes after kick-off). Not something I ever want to experience again.

The legacy of Pete Sala

not directly related but today was an awful experience at concessions in mid 2nd quarter in the 314 concession. There are 2 lanes open, after waiting in line for 15 mins the cashier on one lane closes while the line was still in place to go talk on her phone so waiting in line for 25 mins for an ice cream cookie was wonderful.

Yeah, I know we're preaching to the choir (and I haven't wanted to criticize the non-profit volunteers and student workers) but concessions are inept.

It's pretty crazy to stand in a four-deep line for 10 minutes when they don't appear to be out of anything or waiting for something to cook. They're just slow and inefficient.

i noticed concession windows were shut all around the place today. Pitiful. Small crowd but lines were long because of this. Ridiculous.

One ice cream stand in the entire dome on a hot muggy day. That went well.

And one face painting booth on the whole quad? What? Are face painters that hard to find?

In a nutshell - this is how the Dome has always been when there are people there, why it's an issue now is surprising. Also, people are idiots and can't just walk. The construction has not helped as the access is less from the quad.

Thing is, today there were half the fans (if not less) and the corners on the second level were just as typically bad. Why? Because today they decided to close half the food stands and only open half the windows. So less people, but still a wait.

SMH at closing half the concessions for a freaking football game. Like it’s a women’s hoop game with 5,000 people there or something. How scrubby.

Any thought of going to individual urinals should be abandoned at this point due to the congestion that occurs within the concourses. I've been vocal about this since the individual urinal idea was pushed as part of the dome renovations. I have been to multiple venues as Headmaster9 and I travel to 2-3 away games a year for basketball and have recently been doing the same for football. The pee troughs are efficient and significantly minimize lines waiting to use the restroom that will further cause congestion in the concourses. The photos below are what you are going to get with individual urinals.

At that point you may as well just hand out pee cups.
