Let’s say the season is cancelled in the next 24 hours (and NOT delayed until spring 2021). In terms of looking ahead, I actually think this helps a program like Syracuse more than programs currently ahead of them in terms of recent success: 1. The programs that have had greater recent success will automatically lose there top players to the next NFL draft. We likely won’t have to ever again see guys like Lawrence, Twyman, Etienne, etc. again. While you could argue we face the same outcome, our best players (Cisco, Trill, etc.) still needed one more strong season to prove to scouts worthiness of 1st-3rd round consideration. This could force them to return for another year. 2. On a similar point, our best players are only on the cusp of an NFL career. Provided the NCAA resolves the eligibility issue, it’s possible a player like Servais may still be able to come back and build his resume as a future draft pick. No way a player like Lawrence returns 3. Guaranteed eligibility for Chris Bleich. 4. The replacement schedule we were given was awful. We likely would’ve had another 3-4 win season. Regardless of the asterisk that is 2020, it would have been held against us to recruits. 5. Extra time for the dome renovation that hopefully precedes a marketing campaign to formally roll it out in 2021 to create the proper buzz and excitement it deserves. 6. An additional and even larger opportunity for this staff to utilize its strength of identifying under the radar talent without the ability for kids to camp and play high school football this year. I’m not happy about a cancelled season and the health and safety of players and coaches is top priority. However I think if the staff can recognize this as an opportunity, this program has a chance to close the gap without having to play a game.
