great job by everyone
He has been good against ND his whole career if memory serves. Who knows why :noidea:
Cooney's best game ever. The steal and lay up was a great play.
That was the best SU can play.

That's what JB said, post-game.Could be the "Irishness" of ND that rubs our players of Irish-extraction the wrong way. McNamara used to go off too.
The first half might have been one of his best halves ever. Very even-keeled and productive on offense and extremely active on defense (both Cooney and Gbinije were greatly improved in shutting down drives from the perimeter).
The first couple minutes of the second half were a reversion to the head-scratching freshmen play that frustrates some: stripped going up for a three from the far wing, made an excellent steal and save on defense, then took a deep and contested "Please never attempt that" airball from the near wing early in the shot clock, then didn't raise his hand toward a Notre Dame shooter who made a three.
He had a really nice three-point play in the first half and also made a 15-footer off a dribble-drive to his right; that and his threes were the difference between our huge lead and a 29-27 score at the half. Terrific first-half performance by Cooney.
His defense has been much, much better lately.
He was suffering formm the "I'm in the zone and unstoppable" syndrome that so many college kids fall into. Unfortunately he does not have the talent for that to happen for to long a period of time, ie 2 halves. The first half might have been one of his best halves ever. Very even-keeled and productive on offense and extremely active on defense (both Cooney and Gbinije were greatly improved in shutting down drives from the perimeter).

With Cooney, you have to worry about his "NET" performance. That is, the good things he does minus the mistakes. Last night he did so many good things that a few errors were inconsequential.
In games where his net performance hasn't been all that good it has been because he has been asked to carry more of the offensive load than he should have been. But with improvement of Gbinije and the emergence of Mali and Lyden, he is able to be more selective ... although sometimes he forgets.
Impressive performance for a D-III player.
5th year in the program.
Might have something to do with the fact that Brey's teams never play defense. JB was praising the Irish offense in pre-game chatter, but never once touched on their defensive capabilities. All you need to know.He has been good against ND his whole career if memory serves. Who knows why :noidea:
Illuminating post.
