On the history side, you must know that the Catholic/Protestant thing has been ongoing for centuries.. But, that's off the track.
 
My problem with ND and its fans is the attitude that "our place is not only different from yours, but it's also better". And, that's simply not true. More than a few D-I  FB schools have comparable or even higher academic standard--Stanford, Duke, BC, Northwestern, GaTech, etc. And, if you're talking about academics only, the Ivies, Patriot League schools, and just about every Jesuit college beats them.
 
Until this season, their football program has lagged, although with the way the SEC schools play the admissions and eligibility game, many other programs have fallen behind also.
 
What ND does have is a PR machine [I]par excellence. [/I]From Grantland Rice to Red Smith to [U]Rudy[/U] to the current-day ink-stained wretches, many flowery paeans have been sung to the Fightin' Irish. And speaking of wretch--listening to Dickie V do the UK-ND game last week made me want to.
