seasons, first two showed solid progress, IMO. Season 3 was a serious step back for many many reasons. I thought the team was essentially horrible in every aspect last year minus the WVU game, the 4th quarter of Wake and most of the USC game. That is really bad for sure. Lots of changes have been made in the off season, lets watch and see how the season plays out. I would like to see a much more consistent effort across the board and 6-8 wins, lets hope we can get it done. The overall schedule isn't that difficult either, . Or lets at least wait until game 1 is over. Just my thoughts going nto Saturday but What do I know. Trust me, I certainly wont be sugarcoating a lot of the efforts like we saw last year but I don't anticipate seeing many of those from a total team prospective but I certainly don't expect gangbusters on offense. Broyld will do some good things but he is really a kid without a position right now.

I say solid year, DM gets his extension 1/2 way through and I am certainly not a DM apologist as last year was an unmitigated disaster but there were obvioulsy issues across the board and I think many have been at leas plugged for the time being

Who other than Joe Schad and his bloated face think Doug i really on the hotseat?

Of course he's not on the hot seat.

I can't imagine Marrone not being our coach in 2014 unless we have a truly horrific 2 year stretch. Like consecutive 3-9 seasons horrific.

Even then he still may be here in 2014. What could happen, less fans are interested?!

He's not on the hot seat and he will get an extension. Hard to recruit if you have only 1 year left with no guarantee.

I don't see last year as necessarily a step backward, though that might be an appropriate description.

I just see last year as sort of a 1986 season - where the record was not as good as the year before but the team was getting more athletic.

Or it could be a 1984 season with huge win against a ranked opponent but not a satisfactory final record.

The 2011 team was in development - the same is true with the 2012 team.

There can be no doubt that we are getting bigger, stronger, and faster and have more numbers - and we are improving the facilities and are about to join the ACC.

I don't think under the circumstances that Marrone could be on the hot seat or that a change could be made after this season. I just don't think that's the case.

What was the 2010 team in?

i think we overachieved in 2010, and our expectations were slightly too high last year. It is obvious that we are headed in the right direction and it's exciting.

2010 was like a wonderful gift from the football gods: both to ease our suffering from the painful (and prolonged) fall from grace that GRob expedited, and also to make the long rebuilding we STILL had ahead more palatable. Some people just look back and see 8-5. They don't see the not one, but TWO wins vs. FCS opponents, the 4 other wins (including the Bowl Game) that were won by a combined 14 points. That season was a happy (but ultimately isolated) little oasis of winning to tide us over until we're truly back. Honestly, anyone that watched that season and thought, "we're back!" wasn't terribly bright. I was sitting in Yankee Stadium that day, cheering my heart out, and not even I thought that. I do think that Marrone is doing an outstanding job though, and should receive a WELL-deserved extension. Program is heading in the right direction. Not a doubt in my mind!

Kind of the opposite of last year where every break and decision went against us.

Can we please quit with the Coach Mac references? This isn't 1983, 1984 or 1987. There are no more 7 year rebuilds in college football. Awful teams are getting turned around in 3-4 years. Mediocre teams in 2.

Just because Mac took 7 years to do his thing doesn't mean that its the accepted standard for HCDM.

Doug gave himself 5 years. His words.

I can live with 5 years. Its just the constant comparison to Coach Mac that drives me nutz.

"Well...last year was more like 1985 than 1984." "What we really need is this year to be our 1986 so that we can have a 1987". "Maybe USC can be our Nebraska"...

Enough already.

Last year was a step back. From 2010? Absolutely.

The 1980s are easy to cite when you knew how the story ends. 1987 dream year! The current road map does not mean pot of gold in 2015 so how college football and Syracuse University ran things 30 years back is a tough benchmark given the volumes of changes in today's world.

Marrone is not on the hot seat. But in year four, with the awesome ACC move a coming, I would have expected the program to have a lot more hope entering 2012 than the 5-7/7-5 range the club is predicted...especially, again, after 8-5 in year two with GRob guys and the "system" still being implemented.

Yeah like when the Wake qb went down and we missed an extra point but it was called good.

Only on a warm seat. To get off that seat -- end the losing streak (not with Stony Brook); don't go 0 for November.

I can understand the argument that things take time. Time isn't a guarantee of success though.

This shows me he's doing a pretty good job.

Rutgers is near the bottom of that list. Only 12 teams have dropped more dramatically than that program during the time spans cited. Other recently crashing programs include new friends Virginia, Maryland, Wake Forest and Boston College.

Virginia is going to be good but point taken.

Marrone seems to be a guy that plays not to lose and I'm hoping that was because of the depth and other issues but to be honest Ben, Mac and P were that way as well. Overall I'm pretty happy with the job Marrone has done so far and I hope he gets a 3 year extension.

it was not a total loss IF marrone learned from it----

Agree 100% and I think dude has really made a lot of changes as to his approach.. We just need to play better in conference this year, there isn't a team we can't beat in conference.

last years losing stretch was the worst football i have seen on the hill since Pariani was shitting his pants in the booth. I sure as hell hope the dude has made a few changes

nowhere to go but up. it's much harder to evaluate the improvement over what anyone else would've done.

it's really hard to evaluate him yet. part of the reason I'm so excited for 2013 and 14.

there's definite improvement in conditioning and toughness. i like what he's done there. and that's no small thing.

hot seat stuff is nuts but hardly anyone thinks that

if his offense stinks in 2014, i'm all ears for those who want to say I told you so. 2013, i'm looking for signs of life on offense, 2014, it needs to actually produce.

there's really nothing that can happen this year that changes anything for me short of some 250 yard per game grob sh!tshow
