virginia plays exactly the type of tough defense that always causes us problems. On offense, they are smart and patient and have proven that they can handle the zone. Basically there is no obvious reason we should win this game today.

What I don't hate about this matchup is on the sidelines. JB vs tony Bennett in an elite 8 game is a huge edge for us. If we win, it will be because of JB, and how he coaches this game today.

I don't feel great about the game today, but we've got a shot. JB has done this before and will do it again.

Maybe even today.

Make no mistake, for us to win this game we need to have solid play from just about everyone and they need to have an off night relative to their standards.

Yes it's possible, although maybe not probable. One game anything can happen. Go orange!
 
I'm just hoping for a competitive game. UVA didn't flinch against against ISU. We need to play our best game of the season to have a chance today.
 
The good news (if there is any) is that UVA playing at the snails pace they do will likely keep us relatively close. If we can continue to hang around and make one big push at the end I could see us shocking everybody.

We need to jump on them early and try to get a lead quickly.

I bet we are more aggressive than usual from the tip.

We can't get down against UVa. They won't relinquish a solid lead.

But let's knock them on their heels early and see how they respond with our fans in the crowd.

I would argue that Gonzaga and Dayton both play that style of defense too and we were able to handle those games. Doesn't mean we will have no problem against UVa, just that I think this team has a little bit more toughness than we are used to. And they have enough faith in the defense to not get discouraged if scoring is hard to come by. We scored 65 against UVa in the road game earlier this year. That total will be enough to win this game (not guaranteeing anything, but I think 65 has a good chance of being enough).
 
From a per curiousity stand point (maybe SWC75 could answer this):

When's the last time JB started out 0-4 vs. another coach? Also it would home, road and neutral court games.

I realize Tony Bennett is a fantatistic coach -- but I can't imagine many coaches have staretd 4-0 vs. JB -- at least not in the last few decades

Great point. We don't have to be better for them for a month stretch, even a 2 week stretch or even a few game stretch. We have to be better than them for 40 minutes once. Why not today? Why not us?

Honestly, it's not even that much. Probably need to be better than them for the last 10 minutes to get it done.

Just keep it close until then, and of course - a lead would be lovely.

That's what the pack line is all about. They will dare you to shoot -- Mali made 6 and G made 5 at UVA this year (and we still lost). The 3pt shot will be there for us today, if we are on from deep today we have a very, very good chance. However, if we are ice cold from 3 we won't have much of a chance.

I consider Bennett to be an outstanding coach who we have yet to beat.
