I hate when games start at 9 pm on my weeknights

Why? Get all your chores done beforehand, or take a quick snooze after dinner. You'll be able to go right to bed happy after the game ends.

Providence tip time 9pm YUCK,
I was going to say the opposite. 7 PM is rarely a good time for me with 9 PM being much better. My 90-year old mom lives with me and her neediest time of the day is 7-9 PM. My kids are also here a lot during the holidays and 7-9 PM is a time they are needy as well.

So ridiculous that a non-ESPN game is scheduled at 9PM. What is the point of waiting until then if you're not going to play in front of a national audience?

The Big East wants to make sure as many conference games as possible are televised. Rutgers plays WVU in the first game on the regional networks (SNY, MASN, etc...) at 7:00.

I'm just glad that with a deeper-than-ever bench, suffocating zone defense, and 15-0 start, this board found SOMETHING to complain about.

Congrats guys, you did it!!! :)

Two thumbs up to the 9 start... kids are in bed... It is always nice to watch a game live.

Nothing like hoops with breakfast and the morning work out.

Is it difficult to simultaneously concentrate on the game and Richard Simmons' Sweatin to the Oldies?

this is why I used my leftover vaca this week instead of the week before xmas

Fark them. Anyone who's worked in media knows that people are going to bed earlier than they did ten years ago. Ratings for 11PM newscasts have plummeted because people don't stay up that late anymore. That's why you see so many TV stations doing 10PM newscasts these days.

There's going to be a Hell of a lot of people who are going to have to go without watching the game or without sleep. If you're in college or are unemployed, bully for you. It sucks for the rest of us.

Sounds like someone did not get enough sleep last night.

Um, actually, the reason why the 11 o'clock news is losing viewers nationwide is not because "people are going to bed earlier than they did ten years ago."

It's because the younger set (those under 55) aren't waiting until 11PM to get their news... They're getting news 24/7 on the internet.

No need to watch a local news team fumble through a bunch of contrived stories when anything you wanna know about literally any news story on Earth is readily available on your phone, ipad, or computer around the clock.

Who needs to wait 'til 11:16 PM so Dallas Raines can tell me the weather when I have an app on my phone that can give me the 10-day forecast whenever I want.

And the older set (those over 55) - the people who'd be more apt to actually watch local news - are dying.

THAT'S why local newscasts are losing ratings.

It's really no different than the reasons why the newspapers are failing.

Then if you wanna get really technical, the way that TV ratings are measured has changed radically in the last decade.

Nielsen Media Research's "People Meters" which offer instant, real-time demographic data of TV viewership have replaced the often erroneous recall by viewers in filling out their viewing "diaries."

No longer can someone simply write down that they watched the 11 o'clock News and have it count - even if they didn't actually watch... Either they did or they didn't and the People Meters track this accurately and instantly.

Ummm, yeah, none of that is correct.

But helluva rant though, tiger.

Sigh. I will never understand why people who don't know shiat about a subject insist on publicly demonstrating their ignorance.

The decline of 11PM newscasts happened long before iPads and iPhones and even before everyone had high-speed internet in their homes. When a 1oPM newscast started in Syracuse in 1998(?), Syracuse was one of the last top 100 cities with a 10PM newscast.

Go ask an older relative how his work schedule has changed. No one works 9-5 anymore. Lunch hours are no longer paid, forcing people to go into work at 8 in order to leave at 5.

Can we add this to first-world-problems.com?

You're right, I don't know anything about TV ratings. My apologies for intruding into your well-reasoned, thoughtful post.

Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Yes, and all of this has happened just in the last 10 years, right?

Both I and my wife work in television... with her a media buyer focusing on exactly what you seem to know little about.

And as for the Internet, I had connectivity in my house going back to 1995... No, it wasn't high-speed, but it was readily available across America and lots of people had it.

The local news is dying because of the Internet and more accurate ratings systems that tell us no one's actually watching... Not because people work longer days.

Zibs, buddy. I'd walk this one back if I were you. You have no idea who you are accusing of not knowing shiat.

Zibby, even if you have to go into work at 8 am, I don't see what the problem is in going to bed at 11 pm after the game ends. If you get up around 6:30 am, that's still a very good night's sleep.

I work from 7am untill 5:30 pm daily and from 9am t0 4pm on Saturdays so 9pm games on weeknights suck for me.
