I remember that clear as day. I was sitting third level behind that basket when it happened. The mascot guy had taken the head off, as I remember, and put it on the floor in the roped off area behind the basket. That thing must have been hot as hell to wear. Anyway, this other guy, I assume a student, was just walking near the cheerleader area during a timeout. All of a sudden he reaches down and grabs the Indian head and runs like Floyd Little for the area behind the curtain. One of the cheerleaders realized what he did and ran off after him. The thief ran toward the end zone food area, took a hard left, tossed the head over the orange railing, climbed through it, grabbed the head, and bolted for the corner stairs of the end zone seating area. He blasted out the the first level entrance in that corner and was never seen again (well, at least the head wasn't). The two funniest things I remember about that night are that the Dome security people (they wore the yellow jackets back then) had absolutely no idea what happened until the kid had already climbed into the empty stands and was almost out of sight. It wasn't until they saw the little cheerleader racing after him that they reacted. Man were those cheerleaders PISSED! I remember that one girl standing with a group of the Yellow Coats screaming for vengeance. Second was the plea by Roger Springfield on the 11:00 news that night for the return of the missing head. The SJU cheerleaders were really pushing to get it back. Of course no one ever turned it back in, as far as I know. SJU had a new one made that looked corny, and eventually the guy stopped wearing the new head altogether. They went to face paint but kept the same red uniform. I think that game could be considered the death blow to the SJU mascot. It was never the same after that. People think the name change to "Storm" did the Indian in. Nope. It's relevance was done in much earlier by a daring SU student. By far one of my all time favorite Dome moments. Absolutely HILARIOUS! The cheerleaders were running around like this: couchburn :rolling:
