In my post yesterday I asked if Syracuse has similar resources, so no I do know if any of the resources at the Barnes Center are dedicated for student athletes. I do know that no such resource is listed in the directory for the Syracuse Athletic Department. Half of the athletic departments list some type of mental health resources in their athletic department directory. If I missed something please point it out to me. Is there someone dedicated to student athletes at the Barnes Center? I don’t see anything there dedicated to the student athlete. At Miami the Sport Psychologist and the Football Sports Nutrition Assistant are listed under Performance, Health and Wellness in the athletic department directory. In my opinion every athletic department should have mental health and emotional support services housed in the buildings where student athletes frequent. I would make these services mandatory just as academic support programs are mandatory to help student athletes deal with the demands of being a student athlete in a D1 program. Transition counseling to help with the transition from high school to college, the transition from start player to journeyman, and ultimately the transition from college athlete to college graduate. Being mandatory and being housed where the student athletes are takes away the stigma of receiving mental health services. I’d rather have these types of services than a locker with pretty lights that sings to me when I sit down. I can hope.
