They've been orange for quite a long time, too. We were first blue and orange team in the South (1888). Then, one of our players became the first coach at Auburn, so he took the blue and orange with him. They did choose the tiger as a mascot, though. One of his players became the first coach at Clemson, so he took his stuff and the tiger mascot idea with him. Apparently it had faded, so it looked purple, and they became the purple and orange tigers. Florida didn't start football until after 1900 and a merchant near their campus was in C'ville and saw the blue and orange UVa stuff and thought it would be good to buy that for Florida as well and decided to ask the manufacturer for it in blue and orange when he placed the order. They have gone to a more royal blue than Navy blue in recent years.

The reason we chose Orange as the official school color was because no other team had it.
