For hoops for sure something about playing Clemson, FSU, NC ST and BC in hoops just makes me sick. Can we only move for football? If not, then I propose the following:

Play UConn at MSG every year
Play Gtown annually
Play Nova at least every other year

The others I don't care about much..

Florida State is ranked, and NC State has 3 McD's All Americans coming in.

Clemson and Boston College are about the level of Providence, DePaul, Seton Hall, USF, Rutgers, etc. If you're fine with those sh@t teams, then you should be fine with Clemson and BC.

I won't miss Big East hoops, it has turned into a mockery. If we stayed in the Big East, we'd be playing SMU, Houston, and UCF on a yearly basis. Along with being forced to play SDSU and BSU OOC.

People are entitled to their opinions, but it seems silly to compare mid-level ACC teams to top tier Big East teams. Shouldn't the comparison be UConn and Georgetown to Duke and UNC? And wouldnt NC State, Clemson and FSU be better compared to Louisville, Cincy and USF, for example?

I mean I get it, and I'll miss a few BE games too, notably UConn and Nova, assuming we keep playing G'town and St. John's as most seem to believe. Actually, that's about it, since SU has about as much history with some ACC teams as it does with almost half of the Big East at this point.

But let's at least compare apples-to-apples.

Since I believe UConn will eventually be in the ACC, the only one I will miss is GTown. But I think we'll play them once in awhile OOC.

Duke and UNC in the Dome? Oh my.

I think this would be true if we were gonna play Duke and UNC with the frequency that we currently play the top Big East teams, but it seems that with the way they're organizing things we won't. The only team we're guaranteed to play twice per year is BC? That makes me sad.

I am glad that we won't be forced to play the newbies though.

We play G'town once this year. There have been seasons in the recent past where we played UConn once. Again, let's compare apples-to-apples, the Big East hasn't protected any home-and-homes with our rivals since the 1990s.

If we had states those teams would not be coming in. Pitt and SU kinda started this merry go round.

SU didn't start anything. The ACC needed to expand, we just happened to be the most attractive option for them. If we passed we'd be left behind as UConn, Rutgers, etc killed each other for an invite.

And regardless of what the ACC did, West Virginia would be bolting to the Big 12 anyway. And TCU would have left too. Which means we'd have been stuck in a league still adding UCF, SMU, Houston and the like as all-sports members. Thrilling.

The big east tries to anticipate who the top teams will be every year and pair them together. So even during years that we don't play Georgetown twice we know we'll play Pitt, or UConn, or Villanova, or Louisville (assuming we're considered one of the top teams). That's why most years we end up with one of the tougher conference schedules. The ACC model only guarantees that we'll play BC twice every year. This year we have Louisville and UConn twice. Although they haven't lived up the billing, both were considered preseason title contenders.

I won't miss the clutch and grab physical style that so many Big East teams like to play...its never been our forte. I will enjoy what I believe is a more wide open offensive style played in the ACC.

The Big East died years ago. I will miss some of the old school teams but lets not pretend this is the BE circa 1985 we are leaving behind.

A great moment, for sure. But I'd still rather play Gtown and UConn than Duke and Carolina.

The ACC setup will guarantee each other league member will be in the Dome 2 out of every 3 seasons. If they go to 16 teams, they'll need a new model.

dave gavitt helped to create a college basketball masterpiece which the newly minted morons in charge have now been scribbling over with crayolas for a decade since he retired . barely recognizable now for the michelangelo it once was.

I get that. I was referring to having home-and-aways with the high profile teams. Because we've been consistently good, we usually have home-and-aways with good teams every year due to the Big East's way of placing teams in tiers. In the ACC that won't be the case. The only team we are guaranteed a home-and-away with every year is BC. That sucks. I wish it had been Pitt. At least they've been on our level for the last decade. Duke and UNC get each other, which I understand, but that doesn't make me like our match-up any more. Will there be years that we have good match-ups? Yeah, but it won't be as good as we've had year in and year out. I also understand that if we remained in the Big East it wouldn't be the same either.

so our 'rivalry week' games in two years (or less) will be with BC and NC St instead of UConn and Gtown.. sigh..

Duke already has their rivals (UNC and MD), I suppose we could get the second game for either MD or UNC..

No Gavitt screwed the pooch as well. The man was a basketball visionary but he too didn't realize that football would be equally important, and in time more important. You didn't need to be a mind reader at that time to see that football was going to be big business. The Big East had at least three separate chances to make a real football league happen, but when Paterno and the Big East couldn't come to terms, it doomed the Big East from there forward.

Not me. The Big East Conference I loved died a long time ago. I'm glad we're leaving and don't give a crap about the remaining members.

su hoops is to su football what stickley is to cheap plastic patio crap.

One year, we'll have Duke at home; one year we'll have UNC; one year we'll have them both. Then repeat the cycle.

You don't think we'll play them yearly? That seems such an obvious call from a fan\scheduling perspective. Not to say that's all that matters, obviously...

Great post Scooch. I need to read that more often. I know going to the ACC is the right thing. But, I was legitimately bummed whe nwe were playing G'Town because that rivalry has meant so much in conference. However, I guess I lose sight of the fact that playing some of the other team that we have little to no history with would make the "new" worse than the old great rivalries.

would love to play gtown every year. home and home alternating with the maryland games so we play in dc area once every year. hopefully this game could be playedi n jan/feb because games in nov/dec sometimes get lost

i am sure we will continue to play st john's to get a game in nyc

Big East basketball has been fantastic but its changing and isn't going to be quite the same after its diluted. If SU turned down the ACC offer, UConn and Rutgers would have taken it in a heartbeat and we'd be stuck. The ACC was going to expand because of their contract. I'll miss the great rivalry games against GT and UConn and maybe Nova. But we'll eventually form new ones I hope. I do agree that Rivalry Week will not be the same for us. I really doubt SU-BC will be shown on ESPN and we'll be off the radar as they televise Duke-UNC, GTown-UConn etc. and bypass us.
