stays onboard for next season he has a lot of work to do, and as always it starts with himself. SU this season opened up against Nova with a terrible performance in all 3 phases. After Nova the defense adapted. They communicated better going forward, and they worked through injuries and continuously adjusted and improved as a unit even though obviously they were never perfect. The other 2 phases not so much (although the situation on offense was fubar). As a coach you can never say or believe that you have one area of your team fixed or figured out because it's always a process and you have to keep adjusting all the time. You need a strong vision to be secure in your adjustments over time, and you need to focus on the right issues.

HCSS needs to focus better, and he needs a better vision for all 3 phases but especially for the offense and the special teams and that really goes without saying. I like HCSS's fiery temperament, but I dislike the way he loses his focus at times riding the waves of his anger or frustration (it doesn't matter that some alumni and fans react in anger). I like his passion and his strong relationship with his players, but I dislike how he seems to become lost at times in a belief that the officials are targeting him with their mistakes. I can understand the concern on his part, but it cannot control his thinking. The ACC officials make mistakes in every ACC game, and that's an area that the ACC will improve I have no doubt. Everyone wants a level playing field. I like how from the beginning HCSS really understood and valued CNY, but in other contexts at times I think his attitude (or the way he sometimes expresses it in public) gets him into unnecessary trouble at least in terms of how he is perceived outside of CNY and sometimes even at home in Syracuse. People misunderstand him which hurts him, and he seems to create a lot of that himself- even with some very loyal alumni and fans.

Daryl Gross is going to do what he sees and feels is best for SU football, and I support him whether he gives HCSS another year as head coach or not. Gross has done a fantastic job improving SU athletics in my opinion, and no doubt he wants SU football to shine. At the same time I believe that if HCSS continues to coach SU football he will develop and improve and expand his capacity in the job. I think he has the chops to have success at SU, and I think he is willing to do the difficult work behind the scenes starting with himself to make that happen. Go Cuse!!
