In 1982, the year before they finally actually met in the tournament, the NCAA tried to pair Kentucky and Louisville by putting them in the same bracket. Kentucky was a #6 seed and had to play Middle Tennesse State and Louisville a #3 seed, got a bye. The Wildcats lost to MTS, 44-50 and we got Louisville vs. Middle Tennesse State isntead of Kentucky. There was alot of talk the Cats had lost on purpose so they didn't have to play Louisville. But they did meet the next year in the tournament and Louisville won at which point Kentucky relented and scheduled them.
 
The ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia lists Kentucky as Louisville's "fiercest rival":    
"Separated by 75 miles, Louisville and Kentucky divide the loyalties of many towns stright  down the mdidle. As sportswriter Dave  Kindred once described the Battle for the Bluegrass, 'Lousiville fans dismiss Kentucky zealots as insufferably arrogant dolts and Kentucky fans consider Louisville zealots hopelessly deluded elitists."
 
Lousiville is also listed as Kentucky's greatest rival.  "Rupp refused to play lousiville again after losing to the Cardinals in the 1959 NCAA Tournament. When the teams were finally forced together in 1983 Elite 8, UL triumphed once more in an overtime classic. Since Pitino took the Cardinal's helm in 2001m things have gotten downright ugly. Once considered UK's savior, Pitino is now 'Benedict Rick' and is booed mercilessly in Rupp Arena. "
