By doing so you guarantee 2 playoffs spots every year. One playoff spot split 14 ways is not as good as two playoff spots split 14 ways. And you also make the playoffs more accessible which is good for everyone.

North Atlantic Coast Conference (old Big East teams)
Miami, VA Tech, Louisville, Pitt, Temple, SU, UConn, BC

South Atlantic Coast Conference (old ACC teams)
FSU, GA Tech, Clemson, UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake, UVA

That brings back tradition and rivalries. Labor Day weekend you have a N vs S challenge based on conference standing, with the exception of FSU and Miami who always play each other, and UVA and VA Tech who cannot play each other (that is reserved as an OOC TG game for both).

So this year would be:

FSU vs Miami
Clemson vs Pitt
UNC vs SU
Duke vs Louisville
NC State vs BC
GA Tech vs VA Tech
Wake vs UConn
UVA vs Temple

For SU we get...
Yearly: Miami, VA Tech, Louisville, Pitt, BC, UConn, Temple, SACC team
3x in 8 years: Notre Dame

The years we don't have ND we can rotate Penn State, Rutgers, Maryland, West Virginia. Which means of our Top 12 FBS teams played only Army and Navy would be missing. And Army we can always add OOC.
