If / when ESPN makes 30 for 30 "Broke part 2"

Good read, both the article and comments are thought provoking.

Only Dion likes Dion more than Dion.
fixed...errrr, sorta?
:)
Still. You know that just blew your mind.

Cuse could make a few appearances:

Dion
Mike Williams
Dwight Freeney got hosed out of $20million
who knows whats up with donny after DUI #2

But we have some others that have come out on the good side:
Melos tech thing is supposed to be doing pretty well
Rob Konrad
Rony - although he was going to be wealthy no matter what
danny schayes

I get embarassed for dion waiters while reading his social media. Its that bad that it makes me feel awkward.

Too bad Dion can't be embarrassed for himself sometimes. The young man can be so much more both on the floor and off, if he just brings his attitude down about 10 stories.

Don't forget Carter-Williams on the good side.

That is still TBD. He has his inexperienced mom managing his money. which could be a recipe for disaster.

I think you guys are being a little hard on Dion. Yeah, he wants to be a big shot and this party (that he does every year) makes him into one. I wouldn't do it, but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with it. Financially, it may actually be a good move. Watching that Broke 30 for 30, a big problem is family and friends asking for a constant stream of handouts, if Dion can skirt that by throwing a giant party once a year maybe he comes out ahead, I dunno. also - he is defraying a good bit of the cost by actually selling tickets, so that is a good move too.

He's living out his dream. Doing what he is doing is why players come to Syracuse and why they leave for the NBA. So more power to him.

I think you're on to something: my take is that athletes lose enormous amounts of money sunk into poor investments like real estate, restaurants, other failed "business opportunities". It seems less frequent that you hear the AI-like cases, where the guy simply blew all his money solely on an impossible number of cars, houses, parties etc. and never even tried to invest / launch a business.

If this is Dion's most frivolous spend I think he'll be fine.

what in the world would give you the impression that this could be his most frivolous spend?!

I have no evidence to the contrary (like you have no evidence), but I think I can make some educated guesses the same way I did when I saw Mike Williams post the video on facebook of him counting cash in the back of a rolls royce... and had barely made $1.3 million at that point.

That's why I deployed an "If" prior to the rest.

Now... <extends hand palm up> your question marks and exclamation points, please. We wouldn't want to make a mess of things in front of the good denizens of the board.

Its really sad what some of these athletes waste their money on.

If you look at the Forbes 500, it appears that keeping money, at least for some people, is harder than it looks. Every year there are lots of drop outs.

I doubt this cost him that much. That venue is about $150 per head for a wedding, with a full on meal. Hors d'oevres would be significantly less expensive. He also charges $60 a ticket, which likely helps defray the cost. He's friends with Meek Mill (didn't he perform at Midnight Madness before he blew up because of his relationship with Dion?) so even that probably didn't cost him much, if anything.

I think this is slightly more than a drop in the bucket for a guy who makes $5,000,000+ a year.

falling out of the forbes 500 does not make you bankrupt. In just about 100% of those, that has to do with daily stock prices.

I dont get it. Lot of unfounded negativity in this thread. The expense of such a party is minimal for someone with his income. It's a stretch to assume because the guy likes to throw a lavish party once a year that he's going to go broke. For all we know, he has a financial advisor that has saved his income with a balanced conservative portfolio of bonds, stocks, index funds...etc and the power of compounding interest for someone as young as he?

Im sure some people think it ludicrous to spend thousands of dollars on golf lessons and exotic golf excursions.

to each their own.

not unfounded nor that negative to make mention that Dion has a personality that doesnt reflect his game nor his actual stardom and could leave him with not much money in the future.

you call them assumptions, i call them predictions based on evidence. Anyway, perception is reality.

I'm not sure that posters are more concerned about Dion's finances as much as why he has to self promote himself with such an over the top party.
