Who says it has to? Most teams do not have a QB2 and QB3 that duplicates what QB1 would do. What video game even has that? It's great that Pitt's QB did well his first start... but that is also pretty rare. Look at how much the QBs are Texas, LSU, Clemson, Penn State, etc. are playing below average. Maybe LSU has just had a few great QBs and middling QB coaches... which is why Collins still has technical issues. It is absurd to think that any QB2 or QB3 is going to equate to QB1. The point is that Fran has to give him some at least comparable time to get to what seems to be his ceiling for this year. It started clicking real good for Angeli after 112 minutes of being a starter. But maybe it takes Collins 200 minutes of starting QB time before it clicks. Maybe Fran is going to give him 1/2 of Pitt. Maybe his plan is to gradually increase Carney's practice PT shooting for a start for the UNC game, the next weak team on the schedule. Conversely, what are you going to do if Carney sucks for 2 games... put in Williams? And then after 2 games, Belin? Everyone says it cannot get worse. Few who have been fans for 20+ years is likely to agree with you. We had QBs that lost to Akron at home when healthy. We had QBs losing to 1 win Temple teams. Perry Patterson led Syracuse to 151 yards passing per game in 2005. Sadly, it was not all his fault, as the coaches were terrible. But the reality is that Collins is NOT even in the top 5 worst QB1/QB2 that I have seen in the past 25 years... and he is nowhere near his ceiling yet. His rating is higher than anyone on the 2007, 2008, and 2014 teams. And let's not talk about the decade leading up to 1987. Collins current QB rating is 108.2. Don McPherson's QB rating in 1986 was 119.4. It was 168.4 in 1987. RJ Anderson had two years of 120, with an 89.7 in between. Todd Norley was below 100, but beat Nebraska. He lost to Rutgers 19-0 the week before. But, hey, we should have benched him because it cannot get any worse...
