No. 3 Syracuse (3-0) at No. 14 Virginia (2-2)

When: 5:30 p.m. Friday on ESPNU
Last Meeting: March 1, 2015; Syracuse won 15-9
MLL Draft Picks: Syracuse — Dylan Donahue (Second overall – Charlotte Hounds), Brandon Mullins (ninth overall – Boston Cannons), Warren Hill (36th overall, Atlanta Blaze), Tim Barber (48th overall, Denver Outlaws); Virginia — Greg Coholan (sixth overall, Boston Cannons, since traded to Chesapeake), James Pannell (24th overall, New York Lizards), Michael Howard (55th overall, Chesapeake Bayhawks)
This Friday, when quitting time rolls around, legions of lacrosse fans will bolt out of their offices Fred Flintstone style just to get home in time for the latest installment of Syracuse-Virginia. When they settle in and fire up their TVs, chances are they’re in for a close game: The Cavaliers lead the all-time series 16-15, and they’ve outscored the Orange 403-402. Of the teams’ nine meetings since 2008, two have gone to overtime, one to double overtime, and two were one-goal games decided in regulation. The home team has held serve in every game since 2010, which bodes well for the Cavaliers, but their season has gotten off to a rocky start, beginning with an 11-4 loss to Loyola, later followed by an 11-12 overtime loss to unranked High Point. Among the primary contributors to this rough start has been the team’s woeful accuracy, as the Cavaliers are shooting only 25% (50th in the nation). Greg Coholan, who shot 41% last season, has started off his senior campaign in a 4-39 slump, shooting 0-11 last weekend against Penn. James Pannell is shooting 5-24, but a three goal, two assist performance last weekend could be a positive sign for the future. Pannell shot 1-10 last year in the Carrier Dome, but netted seven goals at Klöckner field in 2014. Thanks to a Tim Barber goal with just more than three minutes remaining, Syracuse narrowly defeated Army West Point 9-8 last weekend, a testament not only to the Black Knight’s relentless defense, but also the Orange’s need to prioritize offensive chemistry and consistency. With Brown transfer Nick Piroli missing the past two games with a lower-body injury (Desko tells The Daily Orange that Piroli, still considered “week to week,” will miss Friday’s game), Desko has been forced to experiment with numerous combinations at attack, lone fixture Dylan Donahue accompanied by some combination of Jordan Evans, Tim Barber and Gale Thorpe, along with true freshmen Nathan Solomon and Devin Shewell. Even including face-off specialist Ben Williams, Donahue has nine more starts under his belt than the rest of Syracuse’s offensive starters combined. Friday’s game marks the beginning of conference play in the ACC. While the Orange finished 2-2 in the conference last season, Donahue feasted on ACC opponents, scoring 20 goals in four games and earning ACC offensive player of the week honors four times. Meanwhile, The Cavaliers have lost 10 of their last 11 ACC games, including eight in a row. Their last conference win? March 1, 2014, a 17-12 win at home against Syracuse. http://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/weekend-preview-maryland-notre-dame-in-cali-long-island-doubleheader-and-more/34188
